✨ April is C-Section Awareness Month! ✨

As a mama who had an unplanned belly birth, and a lot of birth trauma to follow, a c-section was not a part of my plan, but it is a part of my story.

Did you know that nearly 30% of all births in Canada are by caesarean?! While some of these are medically necessary to protect the life of mama and babe, there are situations where surgical delivery can be avoided.

I may not be a birth doula myself, but I’ve had such pleasure getting to know so many birth doulas in the community! And I can’t say enough good things about finding an amazing birth doula to support you in your journey.

Having a birth doula can absolutely improve vaginal birth outcomes (reduce the need for intervention and/or surgical delivery!!) by helping you:
- advocate for yourself and your care preferences
- support you in understanding risks and benefits (evidence based information!) of interventions in the natural birthing process
- a doula can actually lower the need for pain meds by supporting you with alternative coping mechanisms (movement, breathing, etc)!!
- your birth doula will empower you and support you and your choices, fostering a positive labouring and birthing experience💖

ps, a birth doula can support you with a belly birth too (planned or unplanned)

I’ll be writing more about my birth story soon, do you want to hear more? Poll below 👇🏻

Cervical mucus on my mind 😍

Cervical mucus (or fluid if you hate the word mucus) can tell you SO much about your fertility. And it’s a crucial biomarker to consider when you’re doing any sort of cycle tracking for fertility awareness.

As a part of all of the hormonal fluctuations and surges (see my earlier post on this), your CM will respond!

Fertile mucus can be a wet, watery, slippery, stretchy, and/or egg white like consistency. This is optimal CM for s***m to survive and travel through. S***m can live up to 5 days in fertile CM! 🏊

CM gradually becomes more wet, and slipperier the closer you get to ovulation, and you will have a peak day that will be the wettest— usually mid-cycle. These wetter days leading up to ovulation and day of ovulation are the fertile window (about 5-6 days), an ideal time for conception to occur.

Outside of the fertile window, the chance conception is low (but not zero 😉). Dry, sticky, or creamy CM is not an ideal environment for s***m to survive. It slows and traps s***m and they typically don’t survive as long as they do in fertile CM.

For a little ✨ extra ✨ CM education…and de-stigmatization…Cervical mucus is a type of vaginal discharge, but usually when we hear the term discharge we immediately think something is wrong (probably because it’s a gross word lol) and associate it with infection. Unless partnered with strong odour, itching, burning, other symptoms it’s probably just healthy CM 😉 but if you’re worried talk to your healthcare provider.

Pregnancy Announcements…oof, amirite?

Maybe you’re a yourself. You’ve finally gotten those two pink lines. Maybe you’re navigating pregnancy after loss. Maybe you’re seeing someone else’s announcement and are feeling some complicated feelings (happy and hurting at the same time?)

Maybe someone close to you is a and you want to be mindful of their feelings when announcing your pregnancy.

Whichever position you find yourself in, remember to check in with yourself. How are you feeling? How are your emotions? How are you protecting your heart and respecting your mind and body as you navigate and respond this new information?

Toss out any of the “𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙” reactions. There is no one way that you 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 react or respond. The only thing you 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 do, is show yourself the kindness you deserve and allow yourself to feel your feelings and acknowledge whatever response or reaction you’re actually having. Whatever it is, 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙤𝙠𝙖𝙮.

If you’re navigating early pregnancy, and not sure what’s next, check back in with yourself. Don’t feel the “𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙” pressure to announce, or not to announce. Allow yourself to feel every emotional response, and if you want to celebrate- celebrate the hell out of those pink lines. If you’re not ready to celebrate, 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙤𝙠𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤𝙤.

Its timeeeeeee. The Queen of Christmas (Mariah Carey, duh) has defrosted from her holiday vault. December is here. The holiday season is upon us.

The holiday season is often one wrought with challenging feelings for folx dealing with (in)fertility.

Social media is full of beautiful families, sharing their beautiful holiday moments together.

It isn’t fair. We want that. It can feel so out of reach for some.

This isn’t to say that these beautiful families shouldn’t be sharing their beautiful moments, of course they would want to share their joy.

We just need to be mindful of how we’re feeling through it all. Don’t forget to protect your heart and protect your peace.

It’s okay to mute and unfollow as we navigate this holiday season when we’re in our own, very different season of life. 💝🎄

Trans folx deserve equitable access to fertility care.

Anyone who has or is considering undergoing gender-affirming medical or hormonal treatment is at a risk for infertility.

Hormonal therapies like testosterone therapy suppresses ovulatory function, while estrogen therapy suppresses testicular function. While hormonal therapies may be reversible (you may choose to pause hormonal treatment to pursue fertility treatment for fertility preservation or conception).

Gender affirming surgeries (hysterectomy, oophorectomy, or orchiectomy) result in sterility.

It is important to receive counselling and support in exploring your future family planning options and to explore fertility preservation early on in gender-affirming treatment.

Many studies show that trans people have a desire for their own biological children, but may not receive the necessary education, guidance, and support in exploring fertility preservation to build their own biological families at a later point in time.

Over here at , I offer you a safe space to openly discuss your unique journey, to chat about your challenges, fears, goals, and experiences as you navigate your reproductive healthcare journey. I will be you ally and your advocate for access to equitable and affirming care.

I am so grateful I found Kayla!! Not only is she so wonderfully talented, she is such a lovely person to work with as well. She set me up with all of the functionality that I require in my website, with a stunning design 🤩 She’s even helped me get set up with features that I can switch on down the road when I may need them. I loved that this was so collaborative- she took my thoughts and impressions and flipped them right into the site. And any feedback I had throughout our journey creating the site, she quickly incorporated and the overall process was just so smooth! If it weren’t for Kayla, I simply wouldn’t have a website because I do not have the time or talent to create what she has for me!
