For some people with IBD, removing gluten can make a noticeable difference - but why?

Research suggests that gluten may act as a trigger in a subset of individuals, contributing to both digestive and whole-body symptoms.

It May:

• Worsen intestinal symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain
• Contribute to fatigue and nausea

We see similar patterns are seen in IBS, suggesting gluten can be problematic for sensitive individuals

Gluten may also increase intestinal inflammation and zonulin, a protein that can loosen the tight junctions of the gut lining

Not everyone with IBD reacts to gluten. But for some, reducing or removing it can be a (big) step toward fewer symptoms and fewer flare-ups.

When combined with personalized nutrition, lifestyle support, and appropriate medical care, a gluten-free approach may help provide lasting relief

Hormone therapy has long carried fear, largely due to the 2002–2004 Women’s Health Initiative study, which linked certain hormone combinations to health risks.

But that study looked at synthetic progestins and equine estrogen, not the bioidentical hormones our bodies naturally produce.

Research now shows that when started near menopause and tailored with labs and lifestyle support, bioidentical hormone therapy is safe and effective, helping women transition smoothly and support a healthier, vibrant life.

We specialize in hormone health and would love to help you on your journey!

We love a good study that supports fermented foods for health ... almost as much as we love eating them.

In this study (PMID: 34256014), researchers compared two dietary approaches: a high-fiber diet and a diet rich in fermented foods, and looked at how each affected the gut microbiome and immune system.

Here’s what they found:

• A high-fiber diet improved microbiome function and produced personalized immune responses
• A fermented-food diet increased microbiome diversity and reduced markers of inflammation

Microbial diversity is a marker of overall health as research consistently shows lower diversity has increases risk for many chronic diseases.

Common fermented foods include sauerkraut, kimchi, traditionally fermented pickles, miso, tempeh, yogurt, kefir, and fermented beverages (including some apple-cider-vinegar–based drinks).

Fermented foods aren’t right for everyone.... but for many people they’re an accessible, inexpensive way to support gut and immune health & as this research shows - they can have a pretty impressive impact on human health!

Exposure to mold can contribute to a variety of symptoms or chronic conditions.

Mycotoxins, the toxins produced by different species of mold, are often linked to ambiguous or unexplained symptoms.

While mold exposure isn’t usually the full picture, it can play a significant role for some people, and addressing it may lead to noticeable improvement.

Testing for mycotoxins is key to determine if they are present, which types are involved, and the extent of exposure.

Combined with a complete health history, lab work, and other assessments, this information helps create a truly personalized plan to support your health.

Looking for a way to make salads more interesting?

Try making your own salad dressing... and adding turmeric - a vibrant root known for its anti-inflammatory benefits.

Lemon and honey bring a bright, tangy balance, while garlic, mustard, and black pepper add just the right amount of zest.

The result is a flavorful, versatile dressing so good you may find yourself using it on far more than just leafy greens

Save this for later- and if you make it, let us know how you liked (or loved) it!

Feeling tired all the time.... despite sleeping well, eating well, and staying active can be incredibly frustrating

These are some common labs often recommended to help identify where fatigue may be coming from.

Nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D are often considered “quick wins.” When levels are low or suboptimal, correcting them frequently leads to noticeable improvements in energy.

More advanced testing, such as a full thyroid panel (not just TSH) and cortisol, can also provide valuable insight.

Assessing overall inflammation is important as well, with markers like CRP helping to identify underlying contributors to fatigue.

This isn’t a comprehensive list of every test that could be run, but it’s a strong starting point that often helps pinpoint why fatigue is occurring!

Vitamin D is one of the most commonly used supplements and when taken appropriately, it can be very beneficial.

Knowing your levels allows you to choose a dose that matches your individual needs.

If levels are low, you may need more than the standard recommendation; if they’re in a healthy range, a lower maintenance dose may be enough, and if levels are already high, supplementation may not be needed at all.

Because vitamin D plays such an important role in health, a simple test can offer a strong ROI

When it comes to the transition into menopause, progesterone often declines first, even before estrogen.

Because progesterone helps regulate mood, sleep, and anxiety, its early drop can be really noticeable for many women. And to make matters worse, since estrogen tends to decline later, signs of estrogen dominance may also appear.

The great news is, supporting progesterone early in the transition can make a big difference!

Lifestyle plays a major role here, things like nutrient status and stress levels can influence how someone experiences menopause.

At Elevated Health, we look at the whole person, including lifestyle, to make recommendations that help make menopause a little easier. In some cases, bioidentical hormones combined with lifestyle adjustments can be especially impactful.

We encourage you to reach out to us if you are curious to see how functional medicine can support your journey into menopause.

PS- progesterone is important pre-menopause as well - if you have symptoms of low progesterone we can help at any stage of life 🩷

Progesterone is one of the body’s most protective hormones, playing a key role in regulating cellular processes throughout life.

Not only does it offer the benefits highlighted in the graphic, but it also helps mitochondria thrive, reducing cellular stress, an essential factor in healthy aging.

Maintaining progesterone after menopause, and supporting its production during the reproductive years, is one of the best “biohacks” for long-term health.

Stay tuned for our next post on how to naturally support progesterone levels!

The transition into menopause can bring unexpected changes, including temporary shifts in cognition.

This clinically recognized state is known as menopause-related cognitive impairment.

It can involve symptoms often described as brain fog, such as forgetfulness, reduced focus, and changes in executive function.

These changes are thought to be linked to the sharp decline in estrogen.

While many women experience improvement in the post-menopausal years, that doesn’t make the experience any less real or disruptive in the moment.

At Elevated Health, we specialize in supporting women through the perimenopause and menopause transition.

This stage of life comes with unique challenges, but there are evidence-informed therapeutic targets and interventions that can help make the process smoother and more supported.
