For some people with IBD, removing gluten can make a noticeable difference - but why?
Research suggests that gluten may act as a trigger in a subset of individuals, contributing to both digestive and whole-body symptoms.
It May:
• Worsen intestinal symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain
• Contribute to fatigue and nausea
We see similar patterns are seen in IBS, suggesting gluten can be problematic for sensitive individuals
Gluten may also increase intestinal inflammation and zonulin, a protein that can loosen the tight junctions of the gut lining
Not everyone with IBD reacts to gluten. But for some, reducing or removing it can be a (big) step toward fewer symptoms and fewer flare-ups.
When combined with personalized nutrition, lifestyle support, and appropriate medical care, a gluten-free approach may help provide lasting relief
