Ever hear the terms “scraping,” “IASTM,” or “Graston” and wonder if they’re all the same thing? 🤔
You’re not alone — these words get tossed around a lot, so here’s what they actually mean
👇🏼
⚡️ Scraping
The casual, everyday term clients use to describe any tool-assisted technique that feels like… well, scraping! It’s not a clinical term, just a simple way of describing the sensation.
⚡️IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization)
This is the umbrella term for the technique.
It refers to using tools to assist in soft tissue treatment — improving mobility, reducing tension, and increasing blood flow.
Many practitioners use IASTM with different types of tools, shapes, and materials.
⚡️Graston® Technique
A branded version of IASTM.
Graston tools have a specific design and require practitioners to be formally trained/certified.
Think: IASTM = category. Graston = one brand within that category.
⭐️So what’s the difference?
Scraping = slang
IASTM = the technique
Graston = one specialized brand of that technique
In this video, Mark is using an IASTM tool along Muriel’s neck and traps — helping release tension, improve mobility, and get tissues moving better.
