Nicola’s health journey update (sorry if has taken so long, thank you to all who have reached out to check in).
In January Nicola obtained and injury at a birth she worked hard to treat and recover, not ever really being fully without pain.
In May things got more challenging with increased pain and tremors.
July the hard decision was made to take medical leave as providing safe care to clients was of paramount importance.

As an update, Nicola was diagnosed with Chronic Pain Syndrome, Functional Neurological Disorder and hypersensitivity. She has also had 3 Serotonin Syndrome(adverse reactions to medications) admissions to RGH. We are still trying to figure out what medications are going to work best but I think we are getting close. Nicola has had to fight every day after loosing function of her motor skills on the left side. Nicola has a large team
of care providers dedicated to help her move through this tough journey. She is doing everything she can to get better, she even sat and had 15 trigger point injections (as some of you know, Nicola is terrified of needles). Nicola is improving on her walking, from walking like C-3PO (Star Wars) to Connor McGregor (UFC) she is trying and getting better every day.

We are very thankful for all of your support as we navigate through this process.
Social media posts have hence not been a priority (leave of absence from social media). Thank you for understanding.

“You see midwifery care isn't all about having to be crunchy or granola or no drugs or home birth (admittedly these were some of my assumptions before I met Nicola). While yes those are part of it for families, really the amazing care you receive from your midwife is simply because there is a genuine relationship, and she wants the best birth outcome possible for you and your family. While yes, she cares for your physical needs and your baby's, I would have to say more importantly she cares for your emotional and mental health needs as well as your partner's.”

As midwives we strive for holistic care, combining an understanding of the social, emotional, cultural, spiritual, psychological and physical aspects of a birthing person’s reproductive experience.
Midwifery is a partnership based on mutual respect. With midwifery care, the client is the center of the childbirth experience and has great influence on their own health and wellbeing.

Do you have any questions about midwifery care? Or did you have any ah-ha moments during your pregnancy journey (with any care provider)?

We have a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong ~ Laura Stevie Harm.

At every birth there is a moment in time that I wish I could bottle up and give to the family to remember forever....sometimes it is a look, a gesture, power, strength, surrender, it is hard to label.

Do you have a moment that stands out from your journey or a journey you witnessed?

Ways to gauge your labor progression
💜Sound: How a person talks and interacts will change throughout the stages of labor. The later stages there is often an involuntary moans or deep guttural sounds.
💜Smell: there is a smell to birth it’s very subtle but if you are aware of it, you’ll notice it.
💜Irrationality: often a sign of transition. Sometime the laboring person may even say they do not want to do this anymore. This is normal and your care provider can reassure you that you can do it.
💜Facial expression: sometimes facial expressions of surprise, other time clients can go very focused and calm with their expression.
💜Dilation and Station: Dilation from 1-10cm and station from the minuses to the plus( -4 to +4), baby is high in pelvis in the minus stations and born at +4.
💜Withdrawal: Some laboring people go very quiet and do not want sound or touch, they just go inward and draw on what looks like inner peace to ride the surges of contractions.
💜The gooey stuff or another fresh “bloody show”, there is one sometime prior to labor and then there can be another show around 8cm.
💜Urge to push or pressure in the re**um.
💜Laboring persons intuition, sometimes a client will just say “the baby is coming soon, or baby is nearly here…”, and then a few minutes later we are welcoming a little one into the world.

What's tummy time? Think of it as your baby's first workout!
Practicing tummy time helps babies develop the muscles necessary to lift their heads and, eventually, to sit up, crawl and walk. Remember, "back to sleep, tummy to play”
Tummy time describes the times when you place your baby on their stomach while your baby is awake and someone is watching.

Benefits:
✨Helps prevent flat spots.
✨Allows your baby to work different muscles
✨Sets the stage for motor skills like reaching, rolling over, sitting up and crawling.

Tummy time prepares your baby for the exciting developmental stages to come.

What fun things do you do with your little one? What was your little ones favorite way to do tummy time?

Sometimes plans change. “I felt that I went from being a passive observer of my birthing experience to an active player”. Going through your birth preferences with your care provider is important, as is being flexible.

🌸This birth was just before COVID-19, hence no masks. 🌸

Did you have birth preferences or did you just go with the flow?
