If someone were to ask you “Tell me about yourself?” Where would you start? Do you lead with what you do? Your work title, your profession, your job functions? It’s not uncommon to start there and even end there. In many parts of the world we are socialized to see ourselves through the lens of what we do. Our sense of self, our identities are strongly tied to our occupations.
The problem is that our work was never meant to be the source of our identity. Our professions, our careers are means to earn a living and certainly the work we do can be aligned with our values, it can be informed by who we but for most of us it is a temporary role we play. A role that we will eventually leave either voluntarily or involuntarily.
Who would you still be regardless of the job title, the profession, the designation, the office you occupy? If you were born in a different era and did different work or did not work who would you still be? Who are you inherently and outside of the role you play to earn a living?
