Thanks to Doug Gay for this thought provoking poem. Doug is our longtime client and a quadriplegic due to an automobile accident.

Living

Growing big and strong, over six feet high.
Rolling my truck, wasn’t time to die.
Remembering the accident, not much to recollect.
The blown tire was the biggest suspect.
Twisted metal, broken glass.
Upside down, leaking gas.
These are stories, I have heard.
Could have been told, by the passing bird.
Not long to live, was the prognosis.
To be a quadriplegic, was the diagnosis.
What once were legs, are now just wheels.
People look at me, not knowing how it feels.
Having a son, yet to be born.
Happy thoughts ahead, no time to mourn.
Getting up and living, till I am done.
Fully loving each day, one by one.
Living life and having fun, each of these days.
Watching squirrels in the trees, I enjoy the sun’s rays.
The smallest task, too big to measure.
Getting it done is the greatest pleasure.
Listening to all the music, everything to 30’s jive.
There must have been a reason, was meant to be alive.
From everyday battles, to all life’s fights.
Travelling the country, and seeing the sights.
Sitting on a flat cushion, and getting a sore.
To get it to heal, can really be a bore.
Why did this have to happen? No one will know.
Being as strong as you can, let it all show.
Warm summer weather, getting outside your door.
Having a good life is what it’s all for.
Waiting for a cure, not within reach.
Wish I was elsewhere, lying on a beach.
If life is a race, with this I intend.
To give death a fight, to the bitter end.
