It was a bear-y busy day at the clinic where kids became the caregivers.

Child Life Specialists set up stations for kids like Tanner, Liam and Ellie to help their 'patients' check vital signs, apply bandages even undergo an MRI!

The result? Lots of learning, lots of laughter and a lot of very well-cared-for teddy bears.

During Child Life Month, we’re especially grateful for all the Child Life Specialists who create moments like this to help kids feel braver, one bear at a time.

The high-energy musical extravaganza returns March 21

Twenty years ago, a tiny baby named Adam arrived early — and inspired something extraordinary.

In honour of his journey, the Edwards family made a visionary $5 million gift to open the Edwards Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital — ensuring Calgary’s most fragile babies could receive life-saving care close to home. Adam was born eight weeks premature, weighing just three pounds. Thanks to the extraordinary skill and compassion of the doctors, nurses and entire NICU team, he received the specialized care he needed to grow stronger each day.

That care was crucial in helping Adam become the strong and healthy young man he is today — and continues to transform the lives of thousands of babies and families every year. Today, as we celebrate Adam’s 20th birthday and the NICU’s 12th anniversary, we’re filled with gratitude.

Because of the Edwards family’s generosity, thousands of babies have been given the chance not just to survive, but to thrive — with innovations pioneered here improving newborn care around the world. With children as our inspiration, the impact of this generosity reaches far beyond what anyone imagined.

When Uday suddenly lost movement and began struggling to breathe, his parents rushed him to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. A donor-funded MRI revealed what doctors couldn’t have detected otherwise: 13 blood clots in his brain.

Thanks to community investments, highly specialized neurocritical care — including continuous EEG monitoring — his medical team was able to protect his brain function and support him through a critical recovery.

Today, Uday is walking, smiling, thriving — and dreaming big. He wants to be a neurologist one day.

We are honoured to introduce Uday as the 2026 Champion for the Alberta Children’s Hospital, part of the Children’s Miracle Network Champions Program, which highlights the life-saving, life-changing care delivered at children’s hospitals across the country. As Champion, Uday will represent the 100,000 kids cared for at the hospital each year.
