Diseases don’t just come out of nowhere! There’s always a reason (or multiple reasons) WHY disease develops.

The reasons are not necessarily easy to see or understand. In fact, sometimes we can’t figure out why it happened despite our best efforts.

But here’s the thing: our bodies are brilliant at keeping things in balance, and when things go sideways, it’s because something has pushed the body farther than it can handle. Maybe that something is an infection, poor diet, a chemical in the environment, prolonged stress, or even suppressed emotions.

Regardless, disease is not a fluke. There is always a reason.

Hi friends!

I’ve seen some new faces around here recently, so I’d like to re-introduce myself.

My name is Dr. Alexa Birdgeneau, naturopathic doctor and nature nerd! 🌿

I help women who are motivated to heal the root cause of their symptoms to understand what’s happening in their bodies, and to support their bodies' innate healing abilities so that they can rediscover what it feels like to thrive.

I absolutely love working with women every day who are ready to dive deep into WHY they are feeling the way they are, and to explore not only the physical causes of symptoms, but also the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of their health.

I have patients who:
* Feel better than they have in years, after discovering they had been living with an undiagnosed and untreated autoimmune condition
* Went from overweight and insulin resistant to feeling light and confident in their bodies
* Finally cleared up chronic inflammatory symptoms such as rashes, asthma, and joint pain
* Were feeling completely exhausted and overwhelmed, and are now confidently handling their day-to-day

Nature doesn’t fit into neat little categories, and that applies to the human body too (we’re nature, after all!).

So, what happens if your symptoms don’t fit nicely into a category (aka a specific medical condition)? Then what?

If we take the time to listen to and understand what’s happening in your body, we can help your body to heal even if we can’t label your symptoms with a specific diagnosis.

When all the tests come back normal, this doesn’t mean that nothing is going on in your body! It’s just means that the tests aren’t able to see it.

But when this is the case, we can either look into more detailed testing, or consider that your symptoms may be enough to guide us to understand how to get you feeling better.

Healing involves working through layers. Sometimes the layers are physical, and often they are more than that. As we peel back each layer, we gain new insight into why we feel the way we do.

Some layers are easier to peel away than others, but if you’re anything like me, making the journey is worthwhile.

(Also, yes, that is me dressed up for Halloween as an onion! )

Time in nature has always been rejuvenating and grounding for me. But did you know that there’s research showing that two hours each week in nature can improve energy, longevity, and mood, among other markers of health?

Recently, a program called PaRx has been set up to officially allow practitioners like me to prescribe time in nature to patients! As part of this, I can prescribe Parks Canada Discovery Passes to those demonstrating financial barriers to accessing nature! I love how the importance of nature is being acknowledged in such a practical way!

Dance party anyone? 😄

Dancing helps me come back to the present and remind myself that it’s okay just to *be*.

So here are two reminders:
1. Listening to your body and your heart can lead to some fun (and unexpected) things!
2. Being active doesn’t necessarily mean forcing yourself to grind at the gym. Dancing can be a wonderful form of movement to incorporate into your life.
