Family comes in many forms. It can be the people you live with, the friends who support you, the neighbours who look out for you, or the teams and volunteers who show up for your community. Today, we celebrate all the ways people care for each other and create a sense of belonging.

At The Alex, we see the power of connection every day. From shared meals and health services to outreach and support, we are here to make sure everyone has a place where they feel seen, respected, and supported.

On this Family Day, we honour the bonds that keep us strong, the small moments of care that matter, and the communities that make Calgary a place to thrive.

Food matters; in fact, it’s an essential component of health.

For thousands of Calgarians, their health is severely hindered by not knowing where to turn for their next meal or choosing between having food to eat or paying bills.

The Community Kitchen at The Alex Community Health Centre is helping to address food insecurity. Here, food is not just nourishment; it’s a social connector.

Often, a meal acts as people’s first introduction to the integrated health services at The Alex. In 2025, our kitchen served our clients 25,103 meals and 15,540 snacks.

We couldn’t run this service without community partners like Spartan Controls. They’ve been volunteering in our kitchen, working and serving food to our clients since 2019. Additionally, their support of The Alex annually through our Holiday Hope Totes campaign helps to make the season a little brighter for our clients.

We welcomed President & CEO Doug Ndegwa, his family and team at the start of 2026. Their recent financial gift will support community programs for the kitchen—thank you.

If you’ve ever spent time at The Alex, you may have noticed we use certain words a lot 💬

Words like “grit,” “wraparound care,” “belonging,” or “community member.”

They’re not just buzzwords to us. They’re how we describe care, respect, and how we show up for one another. Still, we know they can feel confusing or unfamiliar.

So we want to slow down and explain them

In a new series, we’ll share what these words really mean in everyday life at The Alex, through real moments, real people, and real experiences 🤍

Because understanding the language helps us understand the care.

We’ll start next week with:
✨ What “wraparound care” means at The Alex ✨

In January, The Alex celebrated a special milestone — one year in our forever home.

Nearly 15,000 clients. Over 133,000 encounters. More than 80,000 meals and snacks served.

Behind these numbers are stories. A youth finding a safe space at the Health Centre. A senior aging in place with dignity. Someone receiving mental health support right when they needed it most. Our Street Team and peer support workers reached over 8,000 people in outreach, making sure no one slips through the cracks.

This first year is not just about statistics. It is about trust, connection, and community. A home is more than a building. It is where people feel seen, supported, and valued.

Here is to continuing the journey together 💛

Black History Month is a time to pause and truly see the resilience, creativity, and courage of Black communities. It invites us to honor stories too often overlooked, to listen closely, and to act with care, empathy, and intention.

Each voice carries history. Each story shapes the present and the future. By holding space for these truths, we strengthen our shared community and commit to a more just, inclusive, and compassionate world.

Abbeydale Housing is a supportive community where residents live independently while sharing meals, spaces, and moments that connect them. This Christmas, staff spent the day there, witnessing care, pride, and connection in action.

Residents cautiously joined a gingerbread decorating activity. At first, they observed quietly, then laughter and creativity spread across the room as one resident encouraged another to try a new design. “Seeing them take charge of something so simple, yet so joyful, reminded me that care lives in these little moments,” shared a staff member.

Throughout the day, small gestures of support filled the home — helping with meal prep, recalling favorite holiday traditions, offering a hand without being asked. “Every smile, every shared task, every remembered preference showed me what belonging really looks like,” they added.

This year, The Alex celebrated its first anniversary in its forever home. Just like Abbeydale, it is a space where relationships, trust, and everyday care create a true sense of home. 💛

Every year, The Alex Tax Clinic provides free tax filing support to community members who may otherwise face barriers navigating the tax system. From understanding forms to accessing benefits and refunds, the clinic helps people file with confidence, clarity, and dignity.

For many, filing taxes is more than paperwork. It can mean accessing income supports, paying down urgent expenses, or simply feeling supported through a complex process.

This work is made possible by dedicated volunteers like Elizabeth, who has supported the clinic for over nine years. With patience, care, and deep experience, she helps community members feel seen while guiding them through their returns.

At The Alex, even something as practical as taxes can open doors to stability and possibility.

As the seasons change, so can how we feel. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a form of depression linked to reduced daylight and shorter days. It often shows up in fall and winter, and it can affect mood, energy, sleep, and focus.

If you’re feeling more tired than usual, low or numb, or finding it harder to stay connected, you’re not alone. These experiences are common and they don’t reflect a lack of strength.

At The Alex, we believe care starts with noticing and responding early. Small steps like getting outside during daylight, keeping a steady routine, moving your body in ways that feel doable, and staying connected with others can help. Reaching out for support is part of caring for yourself, not a last resort.

You deserve support through every season. We’re here for our community.
