As the seasons change, so can how we feel. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a form of depression linked to reduced daylight and shorter days. It often shows up in fall and winter, and it can affect mood, energy, sleep, and focus.

If you’re feeling more tired than usual, low or numb, or finding it harder to stay connected, you’re not alone. These experiences are common and they don’t reflect a lack of strength.

At The Alex, we believe care starts with noticing and responding early. Small steps like getting outside during daylight, keeping a steady routine, moving your body in ways that feel doable, and staying connected with others can help. Reaching out for support is part of caring for yourself, not a last resort.

You deserve support through every season. We’re here for our community.

Blue Monday is often called the hardest day of the year. Whether that feels true for you or not, this time of year can be heavy. Short days, colder weather, and the pressure to “be okay” can quietly add up.

In Canada, about 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health challenge at some point in their lives. Depression and low mood are more common than many realize, and they don’t always look the same for everyone.

Sometimes, it shows up as:
• Feeling persistently sad, numb, or drained
• Losing interest in things you once enjoyed
• Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
• Difficulty focusing or feeling motivated

Noticing these signs in yourself or someone you care about can be the first step toward starting a conversation and seeking support.

If you’re in Calgary, help is available. You don’t have to navigate this alone 💙

Support is offered through:
The Alex Community Health Centre
Distress Centre Calgary
Calgary Counselling Centre
Kindred Connections Society
Hull Services
Canadian Mental Health Association Calgary
Miskawanah
Woods Homes

We were so excited to receive the incredible community support of The Establishment Brewing Company and the BJP Music Foundation (BuckingJam Palace) when they selected us as the beneficiary of their Holiday Jazz Event and fundraiser on Dec. 18.

Every dollar raised went directly to our work at The Alex improving health, access to housing and wellbeing for Calgarians in need — thank you!

The Establishment Brewing Company values diversity, inclusion, community, and supporting the local arts, while jazz salon BuckingJam Palace is committed to fair pay, gender parity, and diversity in Calgary’s jazz programming.

Did you know? There’s a pharmacy right inside The Alex Community Health Centre.

Today, on National Pharmacist Day, we’re celebrating the incredible team at our in-house pharmacy, Mint Health + Drugs: Franklin Station.

This pharmacy is more than a place to pick up prescriptions. It’s a welcoming space where people are listened to, supported, and treated with care and respect. The pharmacy team works closely with our health care providers to help ensure medications are safe, understood, and tailored to each person’s needs.

They take the time to answer questions, offer guidance, and provide reassurance during moments when health can feel overwhelming. That kindness and attention make a real difference for the people we serve.

Today, we’re grateful for pharmacists who lead with compassion and help make care at The Alex stronger every day. 💚

Ribbon skirts are a living expression of identity and culture. Their history begins in the 18th century in the Great Lakes region, when Indigenous women began sewing colourful silk ribbons introduced through French trade onto clothing. Over time, this became a unique art form that blended tradition, trade, and personal storytelling through colour and pattern.

Even when laws such as the Indian Act and the Potlatch Ban attempted to suppress Indigenous cultural practices, ribbon skirts continued to be protected and taught within families. Once these restrictions were removed in 1951, ribbon skirts reemerged as powerful symbols of pride and resilience.

The story of Isabella Kulak in 2020 reminded Canada that cultural expression is a right, and her experience helped establish National Ribbon Skirt Day in 2023.

As we honour this day, we hold space for learning, reflection, and the teachings that ribbon skirts continue to pass down through generations.

2025 was another year of showing up. When people came through our doors seeking stability, support, connection, or a fresh start, the Alex team was ready. We served thousands of warm meals, opened doors to safe housing, offered medical and mental health care, and helped people take big and small steps toward a stronger, healthier future.

We saw neighbours find housing, youth get a second chance at health and hope, and families feel supported when they needed it most. Every meal, every appointment, every conversation became a moment of care, of dignity, of change.

As we turn to 2026, “CHANGEMAKING” is not just a word for us. It is a promise. A promise that we will keep listening. That we will keep innovating. That we will keep walking beside people through challenges to healing, from uncertainty to home, from isolation to community.

Real change is not a one-time act. It is many small acts of kindness, compassion, and courage. Together, we can make change that lasts. 🧡
