As we dive into October, we are coming up to Fire Prevention Week - October 5-11, 2025.
This year, the NFPA is focusing on lithium-ion battery safety with the theme:
“Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
Lithium-ion batteries power our phones, laptops, tools, and even e-bikes! But if misused, they can be a serious fire risk.
Some examples of common incidents linked to lithium-ion batteries include:
Workplace Hazards: Tools, scanners, or portable devices overheating on chargers.
Residential Fires: E-scooters or e-bikes catching fire while charging indoors.
Transportation Risks: Airlines restrict how batteries can be carried because of the potential fire risk.
Stay safe with three simple steps:
Buy Safely → Use certified batteries and devices from reputable sources. Buy certified products with safety marks (CSA, UL, etc.).
Charge Smartly → Only use approved chargers, avoid charging on beds/couches, and unplug once full. Store and charge away from flammable materials. Follow manufacturer’s charging instructions.
Recycle Responsibly → Recycle at approved facilities, never in the trash.
Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has helped communities prevent fire tragedies. Let’s keep that momentum going by making battery safety part of our daily routine.
