On February 13, wear RED with us for

At the Alberta Association of Midwives, we’re proud to support women’s heart health; especially during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Heart disease is the leading cause of premature death in women in Canada, and pregnancy can place added strain on the heart. Midwives play a vital role in prevention, early detection, education, and advocacy, helping ensure families receive timely, respectful, and informed care.

This day, we wear red to raise awareness, advocate for better research and care, and support heart-healthy pregnancies and births.

Because heart health saves lives; in pregnancy and beyond.

Standing with Tumbler Ridge, BC

Our hearts are with the students, families, educators, first responders, and the entire community of Tumbler Ridge following the devastating tragedy yesterday.

We recognize the deep impact of such events on those directly affected, as well as families and communities across the country. We are holding space for your grief, and hope that those harmed receive the care and support they need. May the community be surrounded by strength in the days ahead.

This Black History Month, we honour and celebrate the legacy, resilience, and leadership of Black midwives across Canada; past, present, and future.

Black midwives have played a vital role in shaping maternal and newborn care, advocating for community-centred, culturally safe, and compassionate practices, often in the face of systemic barriers. Their contributions continue to strengthen midwifery care and improve outcomes for families and communities across the country, including right here in Alberta.

Throughout February, we’ll be sharing a series of posts highlighting the history of Black midwifery in Canada, drawing attention to stories, milestones, and voices that deserve recognition, reflection, and celebration.

We invite our community to join us in learning, honouring, and uplifting these important contributions; not just this month, but always.

✨ Advocacy Update: Good News for Midwifery Care ✨

We’re thrilled to share encouraging news for Edmonton-area midwives and families.

Following ongoing advocacy by the Alberta Association of Midwives (AAM), in-hospital midwifery services at the Royal Alexandra Hospital will continue in the near term while longer-term planning is underway.

Midwives will be on shift at RAH Monday–Sunday, 7 AM – 7 PM. A huge thank you to all midwives who stepped forward to help cover shifts; please reach out to Meghan at PMAO to get started.

And to everyone who supported our campaign: your dedication shows that advocacy works and makes a real difference in sustaining safe, high-quality midwifery care across Alberta!

Honouring Your Body, Your Birth, Your Choices

Midwives are experts in healthy pregnancy and birth.

Midwives provide government-funded primary care to pregnant people and their newborns. Under the midwifery scope of practice, your midwife provides care to support the health and safety of you and your baby from early pregnancy, through labour and birth, until six weeks postpartum.

As soon as you know you are pregnant, you can contact a midwifery practice through our wait pool as the first point of entry into maternity health care. A referral from a physician is not required.
