International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is celebrated annually on March 31 to honor the achievements, joy, and lives of transgender and non-binary people worldwide. Founded in 2010 by advocate Rachel Crandall, it combats discrimination by highlighting trans voices, promoting equality, and fostering education.
Purpose and Significance
Celebrating Joy: TDOV focuses on celebrating transgender lives and contributions, contrasting with the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourns those lost to violence.
Raising Awareness: It combats transphobia by educating the public on transgender history, terminology, and the specific challenges the community faces.
Advancing Rights: The day serves as a call to action against legislative attacks on healthcare and basic rights.
How to Participate
Be an Ally: Educate yourself on gender identity, use correct names/pronouns, and respect privacy.
Support Advocacy: Donate to or volunteer with trans-led organizations, particularly those supporting Black and Brown trans women.
Amplify Voices: Share stories from trans creators and challenge anti-trans rhetoric.
