Turning Point Society

Turning Point Society Turning Point is a registered charity supporting safer, healthier communities for Central Albertans.

Formally known as the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society (CAANS), Turning Point was established in 1988 as a community-based response to Central Alberta's HIV/AIDS crisis. In addition to health promotion, our organization has since expanded its reach, incorporating programming specific to harm reduction, night reach, rural outreach, overdose prevention, and a women’s program. These programs and services extend to communities across Central Alberta (including Red Deer, Drumheller, Hanna, Camrose, Flagstaff, Samson, Stettler, Rocky Mountain House, O’Chiese First Nation, and Wetaskiwin). Whether you're looking for harm reduction and STBBI preventative resources or are in need of ongoing support, our professionals are here to help. Turning Point continues to identify and support the complex needs of each community we serve, providing education, supplies, and services with compassion, confidentiality, respect, collaboration, and empowerment.

Its a snowy day and that sometimes makes it harder for our Outreach Staff to locate folks in need, especially those that are critically vulnerable (for instance those that are not able to attend the shelter and are seeking refuge elsewhere). If you are a business or agency and have individuals there needing supports such as food and gloves, we may be able to help by dropping off survival and cold weather supplies to them, or by offering other social supports including access to transportation if applicable. Give us a call at 403-896-3879

Big thanks to United Way Central Alberta who collected 6900 pairs of socks to help our community in need and allocated some of these to us for our clients as well as many other service agencies!
Our outreach programs give out basic needs supplies such as these everyday to those we encounter in need. United Way also helps fund our outreach initiatives, connecting those experiencing homelessness to the care that they need.

Turning Point Society's NightReach Teams will have loads of new socks to share with folks as they make their rounds through Red Deer, helping vulnerable people on the streets. All of these were made available through Sockey Day for United Way!

March 6th, a day to honor and remember those lost to the drug poisoning and overdose crisis. Today we display black balloons to hold space for the grief, memories, and the names of those affected in love and kindness. We see you and are here for you.

Feel free to save this image and add your loved ones name to the space and share for March 6th.

Thank you to Cosmos Group of Companies for their generous contribution to us through the Blue Bin bottle donation program in January. We’re so grateful for the support!

Pictured here is our lovely Manager of Administration - Jessie Arthur holding Cosmo’s donation against the backdrop of our Overdose / Grief & Loss Tree. The hearts represent the names of those we’ve encountered and lost to overdose. In an ongoing opioid crisis and housing crisis we need as much funding, and partnerships as we can get in order to provide adequate supports and interventions to those experiencing a toxic drug supply, substance dependency, poverty and homelessness. Every dollar donated helps run programs that save lives and get people connected to care.

Some of our previous impact :
Turning Point's Red Deer Downtown Drop in Centre saw over 16,000 visits just from April 2025-October 31, 2025. This does not represent outreach encounters locally or rurally.
Last Winter (prior to this one) we expanded our drop in space and saw 80-120 unique individuals daily to support for basic needs and warmth.
When the need showed up at our doors, we opened them, time and time again. We love our clients and we love supporting them

System pressures and ongoing deficit in shelter space has impacted Turning Point and many other service providers, (but especially program partipants) by putting strain on our resources, increasing demand for services, and introducing moral injury to staff who seek to help those in need.

Often what looks like public disarray is rooted in systemic gaps not inadequate programming.

Turning Point continues to provide supports to any and all, and especially to those experiencing chronic homelessness and those requiring low barrier, alternate pathways to wellness. We excel in supporting those that are marginalized and have increased vulnerabilities and we are committed to ensuring these people do not slip through those system gaps to the best of our ability. Turning Point has long acted as a system safety net for shelter deficit and the strain this caused our agency is apparent now more than ever.

Despite the challenges, we are committed to carrying on. We will be working with other providers collaboratively, while staying rooted in our values and low barrier method of service provision.

Today being is a powerful reminder that in many cases, stigma still carries more legal weight than science.

Across Canada, people living with HIV continue to face criminalization under laws that fail to reflect decades of medical advancement. We now know that effective treatment prevents transmission (U=U), yet outdated legal frameworks persist.

These laws do not prevent HIV. Instead, they fuel fear, discourage testing, undermine public health efforts, and disproportionately impact Indigenous, Black, racialized, and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. While people living with HIV wait for meaningful law reform, many live under the ongoing threat of prosecution simply because of their health status.

HIV IS A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE, NOT A CRIME.

Our community partner, , continues to lead critical advocacy efforts pushing for evidence-based legal reform and the decriminalization of HIV non-disclosure in Canada.

It’s time to bring our laws into the 21st century. Science over stigma. JUSTICE OVER FEAR.

This will always be our response, rooting our addiction services in connection, compassion & care. Through a non judgemental, trauma informed lens we continue to meet people where they’re at, empowering autonomy and authentic healing.

We are so moved and honoured by this support from our community. Thank you 100 Women Who Care - Red Deer for recognizing the importance of our work.

When the province cut our funding to core programming for vulnerable community members including street level pregnancy services, and without funding any transitional programming or ensuring continuity of care for the clients and partners that relied on us, many folks were left abandoned. We’ve created transitional outreach programming to lessen this impact and this funding will help us ensure vulnerable women and others have improved access to the supports they need.

We’re so grateful, thank you for seeing this need and helping fill it.
