We are thrilled to introduce to you the newest member of our medical care team - meet Dr Sheena Katigema!

She will officially be taking over Dr Shafeena Premji’s family practice panel effective January 15th 2024.

Dr Katigema is a born and raised Calgarian! She studied and completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University. She moved home to complete medical school at University of Calgary. In June 2023, she completed her Family Residency Program at the University of Alberta.

Dr Katigema has a keen interest in full scope family medicine, maternity care, and Women’s Health!

In her spare time she loves to dance, read and spending time with family!

This year as a team, we provided care to almost 7000 patients and completed annual adult physical examinations to almost 3000 patients!

As a family practice, our hope and goal is to provide excellent preventative care in order to allow patients and their families to thrive in their health and lives!

Why aren't we eager to talk about menopause?

Think of how Western medicine has framed women’s sexual and reproductive health. It has a history of presuming normalness means youth and reproduction, so ageing and not reproducing means “abnormal”. The term “menopause” is sometimes described as estrogen deficiency, a diminishment of ovarian activity, and a failure of endometrial development. This ties to our cultural fear and loathing of getting older, and is particularly intense for women and gender-diverse people, who face ignorance and invisibility as they get older.

We are enthusiastically searching for a MOA (Medical Office Assistant) to join our wonderful medical family! We have two outstanding family practice based clinics in the heart of Mahogany which is situated in SE Calgary.

Mahogany Medical Clinic specializes in Family Practice, Maternity care, and Women's Health. The Village Medical specializes in Family Practice and Men's Health.

The successful candidate(s) must fit the clinic's mantra of being kind, enthusiastic, compassionate, approachable, and down-to-earth. The position of MOA will involve a wide range of tasks including front office administration and clinical work related to direct patient care.

Working hours typically 16-20 hours per week (some evenings may be required) - potentially more.

We strive to maintain an inviting and warm environment and culture at the clinic on a daily basis.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Coordinating patient care through the clinic.
• Managing and updating patient records on the EMR.
• Greet patients, make them feel welcome.
• Rooming patients and taking vital signs as required.
•Ensuring the correct requisitions are prepared for the physicians.
• Assist with procedures/chaperone if necessary.
• Cleans and sterilize beds and instruments following universal precautions and best practice guidelines.
• Prepare examination rooms.
• Maintains medical supplies and equipment for all examination rooms and procedures.

The successful candidate will have the following skill set:

• 1 year experience is preferred.
• Completion of a Medical Office Assistant program or equivalent.
• Computer skills required (60 wpm minimum typing speed)
• Proficient in using an Apple MAC.
• EMR experience - working knowledge of Telus Med Access preferred.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Communicate effectively (phone & in person) with patients and all members of the healthcare team.
• Must have good phone etiquette
• Able to work in a friendly, fast paced environment.
• Demonstration of excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
• Team player with a strong work ethic and a desire to continuously learn and improve skills.
• Demonstrates a strong passion for family practice and maternity based health care.
• Professional appearance, well-groomed, and always dressed in scrubs.
• Professional etiquette at all times.
• Reliable with a "can-do" attitude.
• Ability to multi-task is a key trait for success in this role.
• Retail experience/customer service experience preferred.

We are sad to announce that Dr Alicja Kennedy will be closing her practice as of August 31st 2022.

Dr Kennedy has had to make this difficult decision due to the difficulty in finding sufficient coverage during her maternity leave. Due to unforeseen circumstances Dr MacDonell is unable to provide care beyond August 31st 2022. We understand that this is very short notice and whole heartedly apologize for the inconvenience this may cause for you and your family.

To ensure that there is an opportunity to review any bloodwork or investigations such as x-rays before Dr. MacDonell’s last day (August 31, 2022), please have these completed as soon as possible. If you have any upcoming prescription renewals or any care needs prior to Dr. McDonell’s departure, please contact the clinic at 587-355-3300 as soon as possible to book an appointment.

Fortunately, there are family doctors in Southeast Calgary that are currently accepting new patients. To locate them, please visit: https://albertafindadoctor.ca/. Alternately, the Member Service Agents at the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) will be happy to assist you in this search. They can be reached at 1-800-561-3899.

A transfer of your patient records to a new physician can be arranged between Mahogany Medical Clinic and your new provider if needed. Please have your new physician send a request for records form to our fax number at 587-355-3301. There may be an administrative fee for chart transfers - a new family physician will also be able to access your records on Netcare.
