The most common birth defect worldwide is congenital heart disease (CHD) and an estimated 257,000 people in Canada suffer from CHD.

In Canada, 1 in 100 babies are born with congenital heart disease. Historically, only 20% of children reached adulthood decades ago. Now, 90% do, meaning an increasing percentage of young adults need lifelong cardiac care.

Compared to other cardiac patients, adult CHD patients receive considerably less funding for their care. Compared to other cardiac patients, this results in significantly longer wait periods for clinical visits and surgical intervention. This raises anxiety, increases risk, and may potentially result in mortality.

The Canadian Congenital Heart Alliance is a registered charity managed by volunteers that supports and empowers Canadians with congenital heart disease (CHD) and their families at all ages.

Thanks to generous support from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the Canadian Cancer Society, and a collaboration with researchers, the CAFC is initiating a program that will address firefighter cancer knowledge, practices, attitudes, and challenges.

Firefighters will investigate 20 cancer prevention strategies by taking part in this study.
