Living with a disability comes with unique challenges. Your taxes shouldn’t be one of them.

Canada’s Disability Tax Credit (DTC) can help reduce the amount of income tax you owe each year, making life more affordable. You may qualify if you have significant and ongoing challenges with walking, seeing, speaking, daily activities or if you require life-sustaining therapy.

📝 To apply, you’ll fill out part of a form and a medical professional — like your doctor or primary care provider — will complete the rest. Some providers may charge a fee for this service.

If you need more support, PCN social workers can walk you through the patient portion and answer your questions along the way.

“This time of year can be tough due to expectations we place on ourselves and demands that are placed upon us,” says Véronique Dufresne, PCN Mental Health Consultant. It’s important to prioritize your mental health, take breaks and know when to reach out for help.

Congratulations to the Town of Cochrane for earning provincial Age-Friendly Community status. Alberta’s Age-Friendly network helps older adults thrive through better design, stronger partnerships and more services close to home.

The plan is already moving, with early actions underway such as assessing parks and pathways and helping seniors navigate the health system.
Calgary Foothills Primary Care Network is proud to help support Cochrane seniors through our programs and services, such as Case Collaboratives:

Lung cancer causes about one in four of all cancer deaths in Canada.*

This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, know the signs that should never be ignored:
➡️ Chest pain that lingers
➡️ A cough that doesn’t go away
➡️ Coughing up blood
➡️ Frequent bouts of pneumonia or bronchitis
➡️ Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
➡️ Feeling tired all the time

👉 In Alberta, eligible adults can use the ‘Screen for Life’ self-assessment tool to see if they qualify for lung cancer screening. Prevention also plays a major role, reducing your risks can significantly lower your chance of developing lung cancer. For more information about screening and prevention, visit screeningforlife.ca

Most importantly, if something feels “off”, don’t wait — talk to your primary care provider.

Food is a central part of many holiday gatherings and traditions; it brings us happiness and comfort, and most importantly, it brings us together.
However, events centered around food may also bring feelings of guilt. Here are some strategies that may help you focus on joy and connection instead of unwanted emotions when gathering with your loved ones this holiday season.

🍴Slow down and take the time to enjoy your food.
🍴 Listen to your body and notice your hunger and fullness cues.
🍴 Instead of making rules about foods you can or cannot have, give yourself permission to enjoy smaller portions and give yourself time to savour each bite.

When required, a registered dietitian can help you learn about these strategies and implement them in a way that fits your lifestyle and health goals. Meeting with a PCN dietitian is free of charge with a referral from your primary care provider. To learn more or explore our free workshops visit: https://cfpcn.ca/workshops/ask-a-dietitian/
