"The development of physical qualities (that protect against ‘spikes’ in load) requires high training loads; but tolerating high training loads requires well-developed physical qualities.

Presumably, structure-specific load capacity, which is associated with a degree of physical capacity (e.g. aerobic fitness, strength) allows an individual to tolerate training load.

In turn, the application of training load further develops these physical qualities, which eventually leads to sport-specific load capacity"

If the knowledge around the benefits of training load is increasing, is it possible for performance and medical staff to one day develop an “unbreakable” athlete? In a recent British Journal of Sports Medicine paper, researchers and practitioners joined forces to address this question.

The challenge today in sports science is to use data modelling to enable sports organisations to make better decisions. Using Big Data will allow these organisations to learn the facts that lead to success and athletes to use these learnings to optimise performance and continually improve.

Registration is now open for 5th annual Sportdata & Performance Forum, Budapest and an ‘early bird’ discount is available until 15 October.

Nectome's chemical solution can keep a body intact for hundreds of years, maybe thousands.

The idea is that, someday in the future, scientists will scan the preserved brain and turn it into a computer simulation. Then, someone a lot like you, though not exactly you, will continue and add to your life experiences in a data server somewhere.

One startup is offering to preserve people’s brains and create a virtual afterlife

Unquestionably, the use of technology presents a great opportunity to obtain data in real time using devices that are less invasive, lighter, more precise, smaller, safer, and cheaper. However, technology implementation is also a challenge. It is imperative that we understand the usefulness, specificity, validity, and reliability of the instruments that we want to implement. We must keep in mind that if we are going to base a large part of our decision-making process on the information we collect using these devices, we better make sure they work. Our credibility with coworkers, managers, and players is at stake.

Some of the biggest sports footwear manufacturers have decided to integrate the 3D printing technology into their production process. For example, Nike has used 3D printing to refine the design of one of their most popular Nike Zoom Superfly Elite, while New Balance has implemented 3D printed midsoles in their latest running shoes.

Reebok is now into the game using a unique 3D printing technology for its latest creation, the Liquid Speed. This footwear takes an innovative approach to the traditional molding process, using a “high elastic” material created by the German company BASF. The 3D printed structure stores and returns the energy in which Bill McInnis, head of Reebok's Innovation Department and former NASA engineer, claims it delivers a tremendous improvement in performance over traditional rubber outsole.

With leading athletic footwear manufacturers such as Nike, New Balance and Reebok betting on 3D printing technology, their customers will have the ability to customize the look and performance of their sneakers.

Curling is one of the most popular Winter Olympic sports.

Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, called rocks, across the ice curling sheet towards the house, a circular target marked on the ice.

The curler can induce a curved path by causing the stone to slowly turn as it slides, and the path of the rock may be further influenced by two sweepers with brooms who accompany it as it slides down the sheet, using the brooms to alter the state of the ice in front of the stone. Sweeping a rock makes it curl less, and decreases the friction that slows the rock down. A great deal of strategy and teamwork go into choosing the ideal path and placement of a stone for each situation, and the skills of the curlers determine the degree to which the stone will achieve the desired result.

During the current Winter Olympics 2018 in Pyeongchang, eight of the thirteen federations are using the smartbroom, a broom produced by a Canadian company that generates data on the stroke rate and force applied on he ice. The data from these two variables are presented to the player in real time on an LCD screen. Then, it is possible to evaluate and apply the best technique during the sweep and precisely allocate the stone where it supposed to be.
