This is yet another one we have been writing about for years, finally getting some attention.
A new study has raised alarms about the potential cancer risks linked to CT scans, estimating they may contribute to over 100,000 cancer cases each year. Although CT scans are a widely trusted diagnostic tool, researchers from the US and UK found that the approximately 93 million scans performed in 2023 could result in around 103,000 future cancer cases - making up about five percent of all U.S. cancer diagnoses.

Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study emphasizes the dangers of radiation exposure, particularly for children and older adults. The findings suggest it may be time for both doctors and patients to reconsider how often CT scans are used, especially when the clinical benefits are marginal.

Scans targeting the abdomen and pelvis were noted as carrying the highest associated cancer risk. While CT imaging remains critical for identifying serious health issues, the researchers urge more cautious and targeted use to help minimize unnecessary exposure and long-term harm.
