BOXING | Residents from Aspen, Shouldice and Westview Town Suites recently learned about non-contact boxing! Silvertip Training Centre is the home of the Grizzly Strides program, known to manage symptoms for those living with Parkinson's Disease.

Residents explored Silvertip's In Tandem program, a specialized, evidence-based fitness class, focusing on combining non-contact boxing with cognitive exercises to improve mobility, balance, and mental sharpness. Residents will return to the centre later this spring for actual lessons, benefiting from improved balance and stability, focus and agile thinking, and movement!

LODGE PROGRAM | Silvera for Seniors, the only provider of Alberta's Seniors Lodge Program in Calgary, is pleased to see YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) announce support for affordable seniors housing through the Seniors Lodge Modernization Program.

Today's news conference is really a celebration of the lodge program, which allows 11,000 seniors to live in dignity in the communities they call home. Residents receive three meals per day, weekly housekeeping and leisure programs while paying rent indexed to their income. This program is unique to Alberta.

It's Silvera's privilege to operate this program in Calgary with funding from the City of Calgary – Your Local Government.

Alberta’s Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services will announce new funding to support seniors lodges in Alberta.

CHINA | The Explore program is a partnership between Silvera’s Culinary Services and Life, Learning and Leisure teams to help residents learn more about different world cultures.
In February, residents explored China, in recognition of lunar new year.

Gilchrist Commons residents were treated to a Chinese buffet while guest speaker, Bhupinder Bhandari, talked about Chinese culture. Residents enjoyed trivia, prizes, music, and a game of charades with the visiting medical students, and other festivities!

DRAGON DANCE | Today is the last day of Lunar New Year, an important 15-day festival marking the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar.

Last Saturday, residents at Westview Town Suites watched the Honan Shaolin Association's Golden Dragon Team perform a dragon dance. This traditional cultural performance group’s performances are rooted in Shaolin martial arts and Chinese ceremonial arts. Their dragon dance reflects rich oral traditions, rituals, rhythmic music, and movement patterns that are an iconic part of Lunar New Year festivities and Chinese heritage.

The dragon performance is deeply symbolic within Chinese culture, representing strength, good luck, wisdom, and the hopes for a prosperous year ahead, and is a highlight of Chinese New Year celebrations around the world.

LUNAR NEW YEAR | Earlier this week, residents of Westview Town Suites gathered for a Lunar New Year tea ceremony. In Chinese culture, the ritual of sharing tea shows respect, gratitude, and honour to parents, elders, and ancestors. Residents enjoyed a few different traditional Chinese teas and learned about the meaning of zodiac animals. Each resident received a red packet (hongbao) with chocolate coins, representing lucky money! Volunteers also demonstrated calligraphy, writing Chinese couplets on rice paper with bamboo brushes.

Wishing everyone happiness, good health, and prosperity in the year of the Fire Horse!

PINK SHIRT DAY | Many Silvera employees and residents wore pink today to encourage Canadians to "sprinkle kindness," the theme for Pink Shirt Day 2026. Bullying can occur at any age. For seniors, bullying can include dirty looks, passive-aggressive comments, unsolicited sexual remarks or gossiping. Everyone has the right to live a life free of bullying. Remember, it's cool to be kind!

STUDENTS | Last week, Silvera's Aspen Commons said farewell to another group of fabulous Mount Royal University (MRU) nursing students. Silvera has been fortunate to host Gerontological Nursing students for five-week placements in our various communities for more than a decade.

This placement supports students in understanding the lived experiences of older adults -- including living situations, challenges, and the supports and barriers that can impact seniors’ health and well-being.

To wrap up the placement, residents and students celebrated with a Valentine’s-inspired hot chocolate bar, treats, and karaoke. Residents thanked the students for their time at Aspen, sharing that they genuinely felt cared for by the students, and wishing them the best in the remainder of their studies and future careers.

OLYMPIC GLORY | Spruce residents channeled their inner Olympians last week as they competed in their very own Spruce Olympics! Along with nine Youth Central volunteers, residents tested their speed, accuracy, and agility competing in moguls, hockey, slalom, curling and biathalon.

The highlight of the afternoon was the medal ceremony where participants took their places on the podium. Big applause to the Youth Central volunteers for helping to timekeep, measure, track and organize events! We appreciate your efforts to support Silvera seniors!

CELEBRATION | Mardi Gras was this week – both in New Orleans and at Westview Town Suites!

The event, also known as Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the celebratory season before Lent begins, often featuring parades, colourful beads and masks.

Residents were treated to a show by vibrant Samba dancers, traditionally renowned for their Carnaval festivities in Brazil.

Westview’s sous-chef prepared Jambalaya, a traditional Louisiana dish, and King Cake, also known as Twelfth Night Cake, for dessert.

Some residents celebrated with festive costume masks, and the decorations featured traditional Mardi Gras–inspired elements in the symbolic colours of the season: gold for power, green for faith, and purple for justice.

Laissez les bons temps rouler – let the good times roll!
