CELEBRATION | Mardi Gras was this week – both in New Orleans and at Westview Town Suites!

The event, also known as Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the celebratory season before Lent begins, often featuring parades, colourful beads and masks.

Residents were treated to a show by vibrant Samba dancers, traditionally renowned for their Carnaval festivities in Brazil.

Westview’s sous-chef prepared Jambalaya, a traditional Louisiana dish, and King Cake, also known as Twelfth Night Cake, for dessert.

Some residents celebrated with festive costume masks, and the decorations featured traditional Mardi Gras–inspired elements in the symbolic colours of the season: gold for power, green for faith, and purple for justice.

Laissez les bons temps rouler – let the good times roll!

These sweet string art projects were adaptable for all mobility levels thanks to volunteers who helped at each location. This ensured all residents who were interested could participate!

A huge heartfelt thank you to Silvera employees and our amazing volunteers who all invest so much time and energy to make holidays extra fun!

FRIENDS | It’s National Make a Friend Day today, an unofficial holiday to encourage people to step outside of their usual spaces and build new relationships!

An act of friendship can mean sharing your time and talents with others. That’s what Aspen resident Laura recently did when she taught a painting class for her fellow Bridgeland residents. With creative guidance and techniques from Laura, Aspen and Bow Valley residents decorated their own canvas tote bags.

Resident led programs like this are an opportunity for residents to connect, strengthen their relationships with others and continue to learn.

Thank you, Laura, for being a friend!

HONEY | A few times a month, Westview Town Suites' residents get a little extra sweetness at Happy Hour – some Honey, to be exact! Honey, a St. John Ambulance therapy dog, gives cuddles and company to residents, bringing comfort and connection to those who may have experienced a loss or people who just want some canine love! Honey and her person, Ryan, offer joy, calm and emotional support to residents. During our last volunteer appreciation day, Honey received a swag bag with a special toy! Thank you to Ryan and Honey for the great visits!

EXPLORE | Many of Silvera’s supportive living communities take part in the Explore program, which allows residents to experience another culture. In January, the culinary team at Westview Town Suites served a New Zealand themed buffet lunch while residents also enjoyed kiwi-inspired décor, including lots of greenery, tiki totem boxes and tree palms. Hula dancer Taraya performed Māori- inspired dances, sharing with residents the differences between Hula dance and Māori cultural dances.

SPORTS NIGHT | This winter, Silvera is partnering with Sport Calgary, an organization that advocates for sport in our city, and the Calgary Canucks, a junior A ice hockey team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. These organizations are bringing Sports Nights to several Silvera locations. Sport Calgary sets up interactive games and Canuck players and residents play football toss, ping pong, golf, basketball, co****le, and badminton together! Here, residents and Canucks enjoyed some friendly rivalry at Spruce Commons on Jan. 27.

ROBBIE BURNS | Robbie Burns Day marks the birthday of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns (born January 25, 1759). At Westview Town Suites’ Robbie Burns event earlier this week, residents enjoyed live entertainment by The Gifted Sisters including a poem recitation; sweet scones and other treats from the Dining Services team; and Scottish-inspired décor. Lang may yer lum reek! (A Scottish phrase loosely meaning “May your life be long and healthy!”)

MENTAL HEALTH | It’s Bell Let’s Talk Day. Older adults are at risk of developing mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders, which also can impact physical health, independence, and quality of life.

According to the World Health Organization, loneliness and social isolation are key risk factors for mental health conditions in later life. Today, and every day, take a moment for mental health to foster resilience, social connection, and the ability to enjoy life.
