JOLLY | Santa and the Grinch -- together? Residents at several of Silvera's supportive living communities were treated to a visit from this unlikely duo before Christmas!

Santa led residents in sing-alongs of holiday favourites, spreading cheer and goodwill to each and every Who in Silveraville! Eventually, even the grouchy Grinch joined in and had fun. Some say his heart grew two sizes!

SYMPATHY | Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of 89-year-old Helen Jusic, who died on Dec. 20, 2025. She was a resident at Silvera’s Aspen Commons since 2022. Helen became a fixture in the Bridgeland neighbourhood during the pandemic, bringing joy to others by standing on a street corner near her house, waving, blowing kisses and greeting everyone who passed. Her inspiring story received media attention throughout North America. She will truly be missed.

FESTIVE WALKER WASH | Westview residents recently enjoyed an afternoon of fun with ENMAX employees who took part in a walker wash and Christmas party! The Enmax team brought loads of cookies, Christmas crackers and walker decorations for residents. Later that evening, the 101st Cub Scouts visited Westview residents to play prize bingo, and the Westwinds Music Society Silver Concert Band performed an orchestra of holiday favorites. Thank you to our many supporters for helping make the festive season so fun!

GOODNIGHT MOON | Four residents from Aspen Commons read the famous children’s story “Goodnight Moon” to kids at TELUS Spark Science Centre this week as part of the science centre’s guest reader series for their new interactive Goodnight Moon exhibit.

The reading of Margaret Wise Brown's classic bedtime tale takes place in a cozy room where visitors interact and play with story characters and images. Visitors also learn about the science of sleep before entering the main exhibit room, where they can digitally paint in the story scene around them.

This fall, Silvera CEO Kyle Fawcett held meetings with residents in seven of Silvera’s newest communities. Silvera began operating these Government of Alberta buildings on April 1, 2025. Residents provided lots of encouraging feedback, including compliments for Silvera’s maintenance and housekeeping staff. One of these employees is Bayani Dionisio, a custodian at two of Silvera’s independent living communities. Our sincere thanks to Bayani and his colleagues for going the extra mile to help make Silvera homes clean and comfortable. Meet Don and Shirley, residents of Silvera for Seniors whose story shines with compassion and courage. Married for 37 years, the Castons have lived a life rooted in service — from fostering children and volunteering in hospice care to spending five years on a mission in Guatemala.

At Silvera, they continue to inspire through creativity and community. Shirley, a published author of Planes, Flames and Growing Pains, founded the Shouldice Senior Players drama group, giving residents a place to perform, laugh, and connect. Don, who overcame major health challenges, brings warmth and encouragement to everyone he meets.

Their philosophy says it all: “To walk on water, you have to get out of the boat.”
Here’s to Don and Shirley!

Proof that age doesn’t limit love, laughter, or purpose.
