There's more to books than just reading the words.

When looking at books with your little one it is a great idea to add comments that support your child’s development and understanding of:
-Action words (e.g., stomping)
-Location words (e.g., on)
-Attributes (e.g., huge)
-Comparisons (e.g., quietest)

You can also keep your child engaged by adding gestures and actions to stories.

To help your child’s language skills grow provide them with opportunities to communicate and language models. Some ways to encourage your little ones to use their words are:

Do something unexpected - As you get dressed for outside start putting their socks on their hands and wait to see how they respond 🧦

Create a silly problem - Try putting toothpaste on their toothbrush but don’t open the cap. Pause to give them time to respond 🪥

Use daily routines & activities - As you sort laundry make comments and leave off the last word and encourage them to fill in the blank. “Here is a _____”. 🧺

Offer choices - Do you want banana or strawberries? 🍓

During the interaction, pause and look expectantly at your child. If they don’t respond after 5 seconds then model an appropriate response and continue on with the activity.

Have fun….learning comes from moments of curiosity and joy!

As your little one gets curious about books ways to encourage reading include:

📖Read face-to-face

Sitting at their level and in front of them allows them see your facial expressions and you can more easily see what they are interested on the page.

📚Don’t worry about reading all of the words

Talk about what interests them on the page and make lots of comments.

💥Add sound effects and actions.

By doing adding noises and actions you help bring the book to life and it provides them with a fun way to participate in the story.

📔Use interactive books.

Books with different textures, flaps and sounds provide your child the opportunity to experience things using different senses.

🔁Read it again!!! And again!! And again!!!!

Reading a story multiple times (even if it feels like the 1000 time you read it) allows children to process a little more language each time and the consistency is comforting to them.

So cozy up with your little one and let the book exploring begin!!
