Holiday Office Closure Notice

Just a friendly reminder: We will be working remotely the week of December 15-19.

Please note that our offices will be closed for the holidays from Monday, December 22 to Friday, January 2. We will reopen on Monday, January 5, operating remotely for that day, and will return to in-person services on Tuesday, January 6.

Today we recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Join us in sharing this important message from Women and Gender Equality Canada.

On December 6, 1989, 14 young women were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal because they were women.

Today, we honour their memory and reflect on the continued need to end gender-based violence.

On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we are called to come together and act.

How to honour the victims on December 6:
- Wear a white ribbon
- Observe a moment of silence
- Attend a local vigil
- Share awareness posts

Let’s commit to ending gender-based violence together.

Today we recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Join us in sharing this important message from Women and Gender Equality Canada.

Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

From November 25 to December 10, communities, organizations, governments, and partners across Canada join in confronting harmful norms, strengthen prevention, and create environments where everyone is safe and valued.

The urgency is clear.
🟣 Between 2018 and 2024, police-reported intimate partner violence (IPV) increased by 14%. In 2024, women and girls accounted for 78% of all IPV victims.
🟣 That same year, 42% of women who were killed died at the hands of a spouse or intimate partner, up from 32% in 2023.
🟣 Indigenous women and girls continue to face disproportionate harm: 61% have experienced IPV in their lifetime, compared with 44% of non-Indigenous women.

These numbers are more than statistics—they reflect families, communities, and systems that need our collective support and action.

Preventing gender-based violence is foundational to a safer, healthier, and more equitable Canada.

Today, the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), supported by federal cabinet ministers and secretaries of state, issued the following statement:

Building Resilience & Healthy Relationships Through Horses & Nature

Veterans and their caregivers spent a meaningful day at the Foothills Wellness Collective in DeWinton, AB, exploring how horses communicate and how their behaviour mirrors our own inner states. Using the Resiliency Scale, participants reflected on personal strengths and challenges, gaining valuable insights. Observing herd dynamics offered lessons on hierarchy and connection. A one-on-one with a horse, and the experience of brushing and bonding provided a grounding, reflective moment that deepened understanding of both self and the animals.

The Calgary MFRC is grateful to the Royal Canadian Legion Calgary Branches Poppy Fund for their support of this workshop.

Renforcer la résilience et les relations saines grâce aux chevaux et à la nature

Les vétérans et leurs aidants ont passé une journée significative au Foothills Wellness Collective à DeWinton, en Alberta, explorant comment les chevaux communiquent et comment leur comportement reflète nos propres états intérieurs. En utilisant l’échelle de résilience, les participants ont réfléchi sur leurs forces et défis personnels, obtenant ainsi des informations précieuses. Observer les dynamiques de troupeau a offert des leçons sur la hiérarchie et la connexion. Un tête-à-tête avec un cheval, et l’expérience du brossage et de l’attachement ont fourni un moment d’ancrage et de réflexion qui a approfondi la compréhension de soi et des animaux.

Le CRFM de Calgary est reconnaissant envers le Fonds du coquelicot des filiales de la Légion royale canadienne à Calgary pour leur soutien à cet atelier.
