We are VERY excited to welcome Dr Blomfield as a permanent physician at The Village Medical effective August 1st 2023!

“Hello! My name is Dr. Michael Blomfield. I was born in Peterborough, England, but consider myself a full Calgarian as I moved here when I was 2 years old. I completed my undergraduate degree in Physiology and Developmental Biology at Brigham Young University. I subsequently completed my medical degree as well as my family medicine residency at the University of Calgary.

In addition to my family medicine practice, I also work part-time in the emergency room in the Oilfields General Hospital in Diamond Valley and love acute care. I am committed to helping my patients in all aspects of their care, and assist them in leading a healthy and meaningful life.

Outside of working, I enjoy all forms of exercise and spending time with my family. My wife and I are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first child in the next few months, and couldn’t be more excited.

I’m excited to join the team at The Village Medical and be a part of a group dedicated physicians to improving the wellbeing of the community.”

Why aren't we eager to talk about menopause?

Think of how Western medicine has framed women’s sexual and reproductive health. It has a history of presuming normalness means youth and reproduction, so ageing and not reproducing means “abnormal”. The term “menopause” is sometimes described as estrogen deficiency, a diminishment of ovarian activity, and a failure of endometrial development. This ties to our cultural fear and loathing of getting older, and is particularly intense for women and gender-diverse people, who face ignorance and invisibility as they get older.

In today's episode of Alright, Now What? we dig into menopause – before, during, and after – with Janet Ko, president and co-founder of the Menopause Foundation of Canada, and and Dr. Shafeena Premji, family physician and founder and director of Mahogany Medical Clinic and The Village Medical - Westman Village.

JULY 2021 UPDATED MASKING PROTOCOLS

Dear Patients,

As the province is lifting the indoor mask mandate as of July 5th 2021, we have reviewed current available evidence and the Government of Alberta statement that “businesses can set masking requirements as they see fit”. We have concluded that we will still be requiring all staff and patients to wear a mask while receiving care in our clinic.

While the vaccination rates continue to increase, the reality is that the pandemic is not over and as a clinic, we must continue to ensure the utmost safety of our staff and patients.

Our clinic provides daily care for infants, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and both unvaccinated and partially vaccinated teenagers and adults. As long as there are active COVID-19 cases in our community, their safety must be our main priority while they are receiving care in our clinic.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is recommending a 75% fully vaccinated rate before removing indoor masking mandates. Therefore indoor masking will remain mandatory in our clinic spaces until:

- 100% of our clinic staff are fully vaccinated (2 doses + 2 weeks)
- Alberta has reached the threshold of 75% of eligible people fully vaccinated with two doses (As of July 1/2021, 44.8% of Albertan's age 12+ have been fully vaccinated)

If a patient does not wish to wear a mask in the clinic they will still be assessed, initially by phone, to see if their needs can be met with a virtual appointment. The doctor assessing them can then decide and arrange an isolation room for an examination if required.

We thank all staff and patients for their efforts as we continue our pandemic journey and work towards a normal life for all Albertans.
