Why vaccinations are important before becoming pregnant?

Vaccines teach your immune system how to recognize and destroy germs if you are ever exposed to them. They protect you and your baby from certain infections, some of which can cause:
- Birth defects
- Premature birth
- Miscarriage (losing a baby before birth)
- Death.
Vaccinations during pregnancy:
There are 2 types of vaccines:
1. Inactivated vaccines contain whole or parts of killing germs that cannot infect you. Examples include influenza and TdaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis)
2. Live attenuated vaccines contain bacteria or viruses that are weakened so that they cannot infect you. Examples include varicella and MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)

Vaccination against influenza (flu) during pregnancy is recommended for all women, especially during flu season (November to April).

Visit Medicure Plus Pharmacy today for any vaccination.

Did you ever have a question that why is Medication Review so Important and why it should be done on a regular basis? Here are our reasons:

A large proportion of patients – especially elderly patients – are prescribed too many medications, typically by different clinicians. In addition, there are over-the-counter medications and natural health products taken by the patients themselves. In most cases, there is no one doctor who has reviewed and coordinated the use of all medications. As a result, patients face potential overtreatment, use of “counteracting” medications, inadequate dosing regimens and adverse drug interactions. To deal with this problem, patients should request a drug review

Medication Review involves a structured and comprehensive assessment of a patient’s medications with the aim of identifying and resolving problems in order to improve health.

Our pharmacists do a comprehensive review of all medications (prescription and non-prescription), educate plan members on their use, and check for appropriateness, safety, and effectiveness

Benefits of Medication Reviews

- Prevent and Manage Adverse Drug Reactions

- Ensure that Medicines are Taken According to Directions

- Improve Drug Treatment Effectiveness and Value

- Improve Pharmacist-Patient Physician Communication

- Identify Additional Clinical Services that May Benefit the Patient

Flu Season is almost here:
There’s no shortage of vaccines, but every year the flu bug infects thousands of Albertans.

According to Govt. of Canada, each year in Canada, it is estimated that influenza causes approximately:
12,200 hospitalizations
3,500 deaths

Get your self vaccinated. Vaccines don't just protect you. They protect those around you, too.

We are offering flu shots to help you stay safe this winter. You can just walk-in for flu shots. No appointments needed (Alberta govt covers the flu shots so it's basically free.)

More about Flu:
Influenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat, and lungs. Influenza is commonly called flu. For most people, influenza resolves on its own. But sometimes, influenza and its complications can be deadly. Initially, the flu may seem like a common cold with a runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat. But colds usually develop slowly, whereas the flu tends to come on suddenly. Flu viruses travel through the air in droplets when someone with the infection coughs, sneezes or talks.

The Public health agency of Canada recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone age 6 months or older. Each year's seasonal flu vaccine contains protection from the four influenza viruses that are expected to be the most common during that year's flu season.

Your Medicure Plus pharmacist can provide flu shots to anyone age 5 years and older. Please contact us for the vaccination. For all your self-care needs, visit Medicure Plus pharmacy today.

As an official summer season is near to end (23rd September) and it's almost the start of the common cold season.
The common cold is a self-limited contagious disease that can be caused by several different types of viruses. The common cold is medically referred to as a viral upper respiratory tract infection. Symptoms of the common cold may include cough, sore throat, low-grade fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing.

The common cold is spread either by direct contact with infected secretions from contaminated surfaces or by inhaling the airborne virus after individuals sneeze or cough

Tips to Prevent The Common Cold:

While it is impossible to completely prevent the spread of colds, there are steps you can take to reduce your and your family's chances of becoming infected with a virus that causes colds:

1) Wash your hands often.

2) Avoid touching your face, especially the nose, mouth, and eye areas.

3) Don't smoke.

4) Use disposable items if someone in your family is infected.

5) Keep household surfaces clean.

6) If your child has a cold, wash his or her toys as well.

7) Use paper towels in the kitchen and bathroom for drying hands after hand washing.

8) Throw tissues away after use.

9)Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

10) Control stress.

As temperatures continue to rise, it’s important to recognize the symptoms of sunburn and know how to protect yourself. Sunburns are the result of overexposure to UVB rays from the sun.

Tips to avoid sunburn:

1. Avoid the sun during peak hours of 10 am – 2 pm.
2. Seek shade.
3. Wear clothing with UPF protection (ultraviolet protection factor) UPF 50+ helps block 98% of UVA/UVB rays.
4. Wear sunglasses with UV protection.
5. Wear a wide-brimmed hat.
6. Always apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outdoors, even on a cloudy day. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you.
7. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and other fluids so that you don't become dehydrated.

Some medications can increase the severity of skin reactions with sun or UV light. We at Medicure Plus pharmacy is knowledgeable of the medications that may be of concern - feel free to ask us.
