What is one thing you can get rid of today to help get out of overwhelm?

Remember NO is a complete sentence.

If no feels too harsh and makes you uncomfortable

Try:

My schedule is currently full

Or

I am not currently accepting those types of opportunities

Yes! Psycho-educational assessments help athletes!

Knowing how your brain processes information helps athletes and coaches identify strategies for training

When you aren’t struggling to learn plays, choreography or technique

You can focus on optimal performance.

Return to sport and return to game

When it comes to athlete injuries

Planning a way forward is important

As it can help to get in front of concerns like anxiety and depression

Working as a team with coaches, physios, doctors and psychologists

Helps everyone be on the same page and support the athlete

Return to sport is not necessarily the same physical readiness as return to game.

The difference can be very emotional for the athlete.

Supporting them is key

A strategy worth trying

To support struggling readers

Is to use materials with varying

Fonts

Letter sizes

Colours

Some students are able to read more easily when presented with a font that makes sense to them

For example

Some will have an easier time with serifs

And others with sans serifs

If your child has had ongoing challenges with reading

An assessment may be a helpful tool in providing their teacher with guidance on how to teach your child using strategies that make sense for them.

When I was still working in schools and with educators

I attended probably the best professional development session of my entire career to date

It was Fair Isn’t Always Equal by Rick Wormeli

He wrote a book by the same name

He talked about the importance of meeting students where they are

And differentiating the educational experience to their needs.

Because what is fair isn’t always equal

Everyone has their own needs

This is the point of assessment and IPPs

To help make equal the educational experience for all students and learners

This has shaped my perspective on assessment and helping families

Today

As I was working with an athlete

I was reminded of this concept

Only it related to mental health

Rather than the classroom

With the constant online and social media presence that mental health matters and the constant reminders of taking care of mental health and wellness

I wonder

How much actually happens

And

How much is just talk and wanting to look good to those who are watching

Today

When an athlete reached out to their club to ask for help

and a little bit of grace

as they navigate the realities of competitive sports and high school academics

They were told

They could no longer participate

In the name of “integrity”

And the “rules being the same for everyone”

Which makes me wonder

As a club who flaunts their connection to a mental health professional (clearly not me)

And talks about self-care

Is it all lip-service and wanting to look good?

Because when their athlete showed vulnerability

It was immediately

Shut down

They tried to make it go away

Is this really what integrity looks like?

Is this how to foster and coach top athletes?

This is why

I do what I do

Because no one deserves to navigate that alone

Ever
