Before my dad died, he told me he was proud of me because I never asked him for a handout.

At the time, I wore that like a badge of honour. It felt like proof that I was strong, capable, independent. Everything I thought I should be.

But looking back? I see the truth.

I wasn’t strong. I was alone.
I wasn’t just capable. I was terrified to ask for help.
I wasn’t independent. I was hyper-independent because I had no other choice.

A supportive parent shouldn’t only celebrate your strength. They should also be a safe place to fall apart.

It took me years to realize that never asking for help wasn’t noble, it was a wound.

Hyper-independence isn’t a badge of honour. It’s a trauma response. And it’s okay to question it.

As a parent, I couldn’t imagine leaving my kids to suffer through life on their own. It’s one thing to teach your kids perseverance and determination. It’s quite another to leave them to struggle and barely scrape by out of our own selfishness and empathy.

🖤 If you can relate, know you are allowed to ask for and accept help. You don’t have to carry everything alone. And it doesn’t make you weak or ‘less than’. It takes true strength to get out of your own way and let others help.
