Shivashakti Yoga Cafe

Shivashakti Yoga Cafe Online cafe/salon for the discussion of creative and empowered Yoga best practices.

My husband & I have begun creating workshops centred on couples yoga wellness, to be taught at various studios in Calgary, AB, and on retreats in Crete, Greece. We both graduated with an Ashtanga Yoga Diploma from Yoga Passage in March 2013, and have been practicing yoga, while pursuing wholistic wellness for over a decade, including the Martial Arts.

Most people scroll past this truth: touching a tree—especially barefoot—can literally change your state of mind. 🌳👣
In a world wired with screens and stress, our bodies are still built for nature. Grounding, or “earthing,” isn’t just hippie talk—studies suggest it can calm your nervous system, steady your breath, and melt away stress.
Think about it: trees have stood in silence for decades, sometimes centuries... 👇💬

"When we engage with yoga in its wholeness—with respect, humility, and sincerity—we not only deepen our own practice, we also become part of preserving something sacred for generations to come."

What the Ancients already knew is awesome 🙌🏼
And in this case, soothing & yummy soup 🥣

This Ancient Roman Cold Soup is both healing and delicious!

Some recipes make you stop in your tracks because they feel way too modern for how old they are. This one reaches back nearly 2,000 years to the kitchens of the Roman Empire, and it is basically an ancient cousin of gazpacho. It comes straight from De Re Coquinaria, one of the earliest surviving cookbooks in history, where it appears under the name Aliter Salacaccabia.

The Romans made this cold bread soup for the sick and the exhausted. They soaked bread in posca, their sour drink of vinegar and wine, then mixed it with garlic, honey, cheese, herbs, pepper, and olive oil. It was simple, quick, and believed to restore the humors of the body. Vinegar to cool, garlic to warm, herbs to soothe, cheese to strengthen. For them it was a perfectly balanced bowl of medicine.

I recreated it exactly as written and was shocked at how refreshing and flavorful it is. It tastes like a mix of gazpacho and panzanella and it comes together in minutes with no cooking at all. It is bright, tangy, creamy, and packed with herbs. This dish is proof that the ancient world knew what they were doing in the kitchen.

I gave it an 8.9 out of 10 for flavor and for how easy it is to bring a little Roman history straight into your home.

Ahhh, savasanaaaaaaa. The power of stillness. Do you love it or hate it? Regardless, it's the one pose that never gets skipped. What is it all about? Why do we do it in every class?
Besides the fact that it's the most normalized and accepted adult group 'nap' situation we know of, it's really meant to be a practice of deep rest, but not quite sleep. 😉
After all that beautiful work you just did - moving your body and breathing deeply, savasana lets the body integrate it all, like digestion for your nervous system.
It gives you the opportunity to enter a state of complete stillness, to welcome a calm state back into the body and mind.
From a mental perspective, it gives us the opportunity to attempt some of yoga's more abstract mental practices such as non-grasping and surrender. Can you let your mind wander without grasping, judging, changing, or fixing? Can you be in the moment with softness and spaciousness?
We hope the info above makes your next savasana a little bit sweeter! Enjoy every minute of it. The world needs more savasana these days. 🩷

Most of us spend the majority of our days on our phones, computers, tablets, and in front of our TVs. We also spend the majority of our days

Truth 🙌

Truth 🙌

Recently a long-time student returned to class after being away from the studio for a few years. After class, dewy and relaxed from their first class back, I asked if it was just as they remembered. They replied with a calm smile and a knowing look, "I forgot what it feels like to be here".

The time on our mat is truly unique and impactful, it can really shape our day, nurture a compassionate and peaceful mindset, and provide a beautiful reprieve from the stresses of the world, and yet, it becomes so easy to get side tracked. To put off our yoga class, and subsequently our well-being, for another day. Why are we so quick to forget how much benefit we can gain from some time on our mat? Why are we so quick to believe that other things are so much more important?

We don't have the answers to these questions (and we experience these struggles too!), but we are so grateful to be the landing place when you do make the time for yourself. May this be a gentle reminder, or the little nudge, to welcome you back to your mat.

See you soon. 💜
