I am here to walk with you on your parenting journey.

My passion for supporting children comes from the idea that if we can support these little ones’ systems from day one, we will have thriving little brains and bodies growing into vibrant teens and healthy adults free of chronic health conditions.

That’s bold, isn’t it? I know! And I believe so strongly that this is true. This belief is what has fueled the development of the First 18.

**THE TRAVELLING APOTHECARY**

My husband is about to kill me as we’ve been lugging this bag of goodness around on our trip and I’ve used a handful of them, that’s it! This thing ways a ton yet I can’t bring myself to part with any of it. We’ve got anti viral support, antibacterial support, total immune support, you name it, we got it!

My parents came to see us recently and my dad had packaged his neatly in little plastic bags… someone’s the wiser 🤣.

In all seriousness though - I feel alot better knowing that we have support having been in small towns in France, Spain, Kenya and Greece where grabbing immune support may not be an option.

On that note - I’ve found myself walking into ‘pharmacies’ in Europe just to peruse the aisles as they’ve got an abundance of herbal medicine as well as homeopathics.

In Spain, my middle guy rolled his ankle so badly he was hobbling around for a few days. I walked in and grabbed Rhus tox, ruta grav and arnica as well as an arnica cream that I haven’t been able to find in Canada for 5 plus years! The little dude was back playing football in no time! Kids ability to heal quickly? Homeo support? Both? I think the latter 🤓

Taking bets on Smitty throwing the bag out or throwing his back out? 🤣😂

Naturopathic Medicine And Your Child’s Health 💚

Part 4/5 series with Dr. Hillary Dinning:

Lingering concerns:

‘My tummy hurts’ or ‘my skin is itchy’ (with rashes), or ‘my child keeps getting sick’ – these are all reasons to see us! We are here to dive a little deeper into medical concerns, rule out red flags, and support the body to clear the lingerers! I often see digestion issues in kiddos. There are quite a few avenues to explore aside from having stomaches be their ‘normal.’ These include lingering infections such as parasites, food sensitivities post antibiotics or from early days, and nervous system and anxiety issues, amongst many others. 😬

It’s similar to skin issues. If routes of elimination are not working properly, then things come out through the skin. So throughout an intake form, I’m evaluating which route is not working optimally and support/treating in order to clear the issue. 👩‍⚕️

Lastly – just as much as acute illnesses walk through my door, so do issues such as ‘my child is always sick’ or ‘when my child gets sick, it always lingers.’ There can be multiple avenues to explore this picture as well. Most of the immune system sits in our digestive tract, so we want to optimize the function of this route of elimination. We also look into teaching the body about infections and boosting its immunity versus suppressing symptoms. 🤧

Naturopathic Medicine And Your Child’s Health 💚

You know those ‘Hi again, I’m reintroducing myself as I have new followers’ posts? Love those btw… anyways, instead of those I’m reposting from a series/blog I did on how naturopathic medicine can support all our children… here goes! Part two…

Part 2/5 series with Dr. Hillary Dinning:

Treat Acute Illnesses:

A children’s naturopath can also treat acute illnesses! You can imagine what has walked through my door so far this school year! I’ll assess and treat fevers, ear infections, nasal congestion, throat issues, lung congestion, lethargy due to illnesses, repeated illnesses, and stomach infections! 🤧

We also have the ability and knowledge of when to refer to hospital and/or pharmaceutical support. What does this look like? For example, if there are enlarged tonsils, exudate, soreness to swallow, or raised temperature, I would most likely refer to swabs and potentially use antibiotics. Strep infections don’t necessarily walk straight, and due to seeing PANDAs cases in my practice, I think my personal bias is to not mess around with a strep infection. Not only would one potentially use antibiotics there are three different supplements I use to support the body with the intention for the infection not to return! 💊

MOST often than not, treating acute infections can be done with naturopathic modalities. And what I love most is that the various treatment options encourage the body to do its healing which is so beneficial for the development versus suppressing symptoms. 🍃

An example of this is to encourage a fever (within reason…see my post on fevers in September) to do its job in order for the body to learn an infection well and build the immune system. Versus suppressing it. 🤒

Naturopathic Medicine And Your Child’s Health 💚

Part 2/5 series with Dr. Hillary Dinning:

Well-child checks:

Well-child checks for newborns right through to 18 years old! This includes a complete physical exam, talking through chief concerns, as well as going through an overview of all systems and lifestyle factors. It’s a great way to address concerns yet also for the prevention of future illness. 🤧

These often start at days old or weeks old. In the early days, these can be an opportunity to ask a lot of ‘first-time parent’ questions on sleep, feeding, and development, and review their different body systems – digestion, signs of their immune system, and skin – to name a few. 👶

Once I’ve seen individuals, oftentimes, I’ll be a part of your ‘acute care team.’ What I mean by this is when babes/toddlers go through sicknesses, I’m available to get on a quick phone call and review symptoms. My answers can be as simple as ‘head to the emergency,’ ‘meet me at the clinic to do a physical,’ or as complex as ‘continue to monitor and call me back in 2 hours/ 6 hours/ in the morning.’ The more education parents have around acute illness, the better equipped they are to support our children! ✨

Later years well-child checks can look very different than talking about diaper rash and sleeping. We then move into a lot more emotions, how our bodies change, and again, any medical concerns one may have. Well-child checks in later years allow your children to do most of the talking! Empowering them in their health, knowing their bodies, and how they operate. 🙏

**FEVERS PART TWO**

After I had made the prior post, I went home that night with my 8 year old who fevered for two - three days. Thought I’d share my own experience as sometimes those can be helpful.

This was a mild case yet two talking points was understanding how slowly fevered rose and also how I evaluated the need for a med that reduces fever/pain.

Note that this situation played out this way yet all of them are different - kid and case!

Special shout out to my dear friend and MD (close!) - treating your own kids is not usually my route I go yet in acute situations it has to be just like every other parent! It’s nice to have a voice of reason on the other end of the line when you’re not thinking straight (more with your heart and sometimes fear!) That was Marta ❤️

Often times when new parents first come on board , I’ll encourage them to reach out when babe/child goes through their first illnesses so I can provide that voice of reason 💫❤️

Excuse my hair and weird sunbeam btw… this was clearly on the fly 😂

**WHAT MESSAGES DO WE TELL OURSELVES?**

OIY, my ❤️.

I hope she is telling herself that her humour will take her so far in life. Will allow her to laugh at her failures, free her worries, and make her heart sing, and her belly hurt. A good hurt. The best!

I hope she is telling herself that she will fail. To know that this will be a part of her story. That she may land hard sometimes, and it may not feel good, yet trust that she will understand how the failure plays a role in her overall life journey.

I hope she is telling her self that she is stunning and vibrant and beautiful all wrapped up into one. That physical beauty may look like muscular thighs or awkward stages just as much as it may look like long luscious locks and eyelashes.

I hope she is telling herself that intelligence and knowledge are key yet to always check in with her intuition when making any decision. that this ultimately will keep her in alignment with her highest good.

I hope she is telling herself to stop and ask her what she feels like she needs in times of distress. And to trust that the answers will come to her.

I hope she is telling her self to have fun. Create fun, be fun, and allow her vibrant child to always shine through. Uninhibited.

I hope she is telling herself that loving herself will always make her feel filled up.

I hope she is telling her self that she knows that her mom is her biggest fan through every part of her journey through life 💫❤️

ADHD and Hyperactivity: Effects on family systems

I’ve had this convo often with families this week and wanted to share to support.

Hyperactivity can be disruptive to a family system! Here is another way to look at it - NOT to disregard how tough this can be, yet MORESO to create space for you to take a breath (or two), know you as a parent with a child with hyperactivity is doing AN AMAZING JOB AT PARENTING, and that their intuitive little bodies are doing actions that are actually directed at HEALING themselves.

THIS is where naturopathic medicine can help, solely or alongside medications, to support the body to heal and grow into the vibrant being that your little one is!

Parents: you are doing an incredible job. Sending love to you ❤️

Family traits run strong 😂

I think we as parents often look at our children and their characteristics be it personality or physical traits and think ‘they got that from me’. And they do! I love how you can see it throughout a family (see pic lol!)

What also amazes me is how each child comes into this world on their own journey. Often times you feel fully responsible as a parent for every single thing a child does/says/acts yet if we can take a step back and remember they are their own person, we can allow space for curiosity about who they are and allow room for growth.

It’s hard to imagine this concept when they are a baby or even a toddler yet I think it applies.

And I’m experiencing this right now with our 7.5 year old. Finding that my structure, my approach to parenting, building a relationship feels all like unchartered territory as what used to work doesn’t seem to as much anymore. I recognize by stepping back, answers in how to do this thing called ‘raising kids’ might just come to me by observing….

Can anyone relate? Advice welcome… lol!! I’ll let you know how it goes.
