Founded in 1995, Oxford House Foundation of Canada is a non-profit organization that provides self-run, peer-supported sober recovery homes for men and women who have a history of substance abuse and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. By providing
a safe and stable environment where men and women can focus on their recovery, Oxford House supports individuals to develop the skills necessary for self-sufficiency and successful reintegration back into society. Oxford House has 28 recovery homes operating in Calgary, Drumheller and Edmonton. When men and women in recovery come to Oxford House, they have already taken some important steps on their road to recovery. They’re ready to work hard. They know they’ll get out what they put in. And when they take the next step to live in an Oxford Home, they know we’ll support them. Because we’ve been there and know how important this step is. Recovery without relapse is possible in an Oxford home. Each home forms its own family and is situated in a suburban neighbourhood away from danger areas. The peer support of other residents in the house who have experienced many of the same difficulties is a benefit to our residents. They find understanding and hope while learning how to live with life’s challenges.

Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in community.
At Oxford House, our program is built on social learning, self-help, and peer support. We know that having a safe and sober place to live can make all the difference for someone rebuilding their life after addiction. Returning to unstable housing, stressful environments, or homelessness after treatment often leads to relapse. Oxford House offers something different: a stable, home-like environment where individuals can focus on healing.
Here, residents build healthy relationships, learn life skills, and grow their confidence in living substance-free. By surrounding themselves with peers committed to sobriety, they see recovery in action every day.
Strong, sober social networks are one of the most powerful predictors of long-term recovery—and together, we help make them possible.

A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to Grace, Damien, Ayvah, and Kaleb for hosting the Neighors For Hope fundraising event on April 9th in support of Oxford House.
The evening felt incredibly personal, warm, and genuine—it was clear how much care and intention went into every detail. We had such a wonderful time, and it truly meant a lot to be part of something so special.
We are deeply grateful for the funds raised, but just as meaningful was the space you created for us to speak openly and help break the stigma surrounding addiction. That opportunity means more than we can fully express. Thank you for fostering an environment where honest conversations can happen, and where understanding and compassion can grow.
It’s so inspiring to see students leading with such kindness, generosity, and a genuine desire to make a difference—it truly shows.
Our hearts are full. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, your effort, and the meaningful impact you’ve made.
With sincere gratitude,
The Oxford House Team 💙

Indigenous individuals battling addiction often carry the weight of intergenerational trauma, a burden that extends far beyond their own experiences. The painful legacy of residential schools and the Sixties Scoop has left deep scars on Indigenous communities, with the effects rippling through generations. Even those who didn't directly attend these schools often grew up in homes marked by the trauma their parents or grandparents endured, leading to cycles of pain and struggle.
At Oxford House, we acknowledge the unique challenges faced by Indigenous individuals in recovery. That's why we developed Peer and Culturally Supported Indigenous Recovery Homes, specifically designed to provide a safe, culturally sensitive environment where healing can truly begin. By embracing both traditional and western practices, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and safety, allowing individuals to reclaim their lives and rebuild their communities through reconnecting with their culture.
Healing is a journey, and with the right support, it's a journey that can lead to profound transformation. We stand with our Indigenous brothers and sisters in their recovery, honouring their resilience and strength.

"Change the way you think, feel, speak, and act, and you begin to change your world."
Recovery from addiction is more than just breaking free from the physical grip of substances; it’s about transforming your entire mindset and approach to life. By consciously choosing to think positively, express gratitude, and act with intention, you create a ripple effect that alters your environment and relationships. Every time you shift a negative thought to a positive one, or replace an old habit with a new, healthier choice, you are not just changing yourself; you are reshaping the world around you.
This journey of recovery is about embracing the power you have to redefine your life, one thought, one word, and one action at a time. Your new world begins with the changes you make within yourself. Keep going, because every step forward is a step towards a brighter, more fulfilling life.

When men and women in recovery come to Oxford House, they have already taken some important steps on their road to recovery. They’re ready to work hard to maintain their recovery and take the necessary steps toward independent, financially sustainable and more fulfilling lives. And when they move into an Oxford Home, they know we’ll welcome and support them with information and resources within the recovery, and greater community.
Why?
Because we’ve been there and understand that acceptance, hope, honesty, personal accountability, goal setting, and gratitude are crucial to long-term recovery.
When asked why the program works, residents respond:
•They’ve learned life skills such as conflict resolution, listening, cooperation and assertiveness
•They are able to focus on self-care, recovery, have good social supports in place
•They’ve learned to become accountable and responsible
•They are healing family relationships and building new healthy relationships
•They feel safe, increased self worth/ confidence/ esteem. Each home forms its own family and is situated in a suburban neighbourhood away from danger areas.
The peer support of other residents in the house who have experienced many of the same difficulties is a benefit to our residents. They find understanding and hope while learning how to live with life’s challenges.
