To recognize the work of UNA Locals during Nurses Week from May 11 to May 17 this year, UNA is inviting Locals and members to submit examples of member engagement efforts created and used during that week.

The theme of this year’s challenge is Our Nurses, Our Future. Locals are encouraged to enter submissions that follow that theme.

Entries will be accepted from or on behalf of locals in five categories divided by local membership size

DEADLINE: The deadline to submit is Sunday, May 31, 2026. The winners will be announced at the Annual General Meeting.

Upcoming UNA Wellness day! (Online)

Shifts Happen: Generations & AI in Nursing is the theme of United Nurses of Alberta’s next Wellness Day on Friday, March 20, 2026 from 900 to 1530.

UNA members are encouraged to participate in the day-long online event, which will feature sessions and a panel discussion with UNA President Heather Smith, Meagan Johnson, and Tracie Risling.

This event will explore how generational experiences shape communication, leadership expectations, resilience, and workplace culture in nursing, how nurses across generations perceive and adopt emerging technologies, and the real-world impact of AI in nursing practice—from clinical decision support to documentation and workflow optimization.

Participants will leave with knowledge and tools to strengthen cross-generational collaboration, reduce friction around innovation, and ensure AI enhances—rather than diminishes—the human connection at the heart of nursing. Whether you are a nurse leader, educator, or clinician, this webinar will help you navigate generational dynamics and lead confidently in the evolving landscape of AI in nursing.

UNA members planning to attend are encouraged to request a Professional Development Day.

Members who are unable to attend this Wellness Day live will have the opportunity to view a recorded version following the event. More information will be available shortly after the live event on how to access the recording.

United Nurses of Alberta stands in solidarity with Auxiliary Nursing Care members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees who have served notice for a province-wide strike to commence at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 22.

A strike by Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides and other health care workers represented by AUPE at Alberta Health Services, Recovery Alberta, Primary Care Alberta, Assisted Living Alberta and Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre facilities raises serious concerns for UNA members who may be asked by supervisors to do the work of their striking co-workers.

UNA therefore recommends that its members keep in mind the following points:

✔️Wear your RN or RPN pin on the job to make it clear why you are at work.

✔️Pay close attention to work that would normally be done by LPNs and HCAs.

✔️Where there is confusion as to what is LPN or HCA work and what is RN/RPN work, seek clarity as soon as possible from your out-of-scope manager.

✔️Note how many LPNs are there on each shift and, if there are insufficient numbers, inform your manager you cannot do the work of a missing LPN.

✔️In the event you are ordered to do LPN or HCA work, obey and grieve later if your refusal is met with the threat of discipline.

✔️Immediately inform your Local or UNA Labour Relations Officer if you feel you are being asked to do the work of striking employees, if more RNs/RPNs are suddenly being scheduled to work, or if you are reassigned to a different work area.
