What is spirituality?
Part 1 in a 3 part article series on How to be Spiritual
I was asked by someone “How do you be Spiritual.” After giving this a fair bit of thought, I realized it's tough for some people to be spiritual when so many people aren't even sure what spirituality is... so we will start there and share a little of what spirituality is.
Wikipedia's definition of spirituality is:
“Spirituality can refer to an ultimate or an alleged immaterial reality; an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his/her being; or the “deepest values and meanings by which people live.”
Peter Russell's definition of spirituality is:
“The essence of spirituality is the search to know our true selves, to discover the real nature of consciousness. This quest has been the foundation of all the great spiritual teachings, and the goal of all the great mystics.”
Dr. Larry Culliford from Psychology Today has even described spirituality as a “brilliant adventure park contains many related themes.” Dr. Culliford goes on to say that spirituality is better to be thought of as “a boundary-less dimension of human experience.”
Others have described spirituality as “a power in the universe that is greater than oneself.” It can be a way of finding inner peace within yourself. It has been defined as “a belief in a power operating in the universe, of the universe itself.” While even others have described it as “a sense or inner connection with all living things. A oneness with the universe and all that is in it.”
Spirituality is free of institutional boundaries. You do not have to belong to a church or religion. It has no rules or laws, limitations, beliefs, attitudes, actions, and practices. It is what motivates you, gives you a reason to get up in the mourning. It can stimulate you right down to your deepest inner being, your soul. Spirituality can effect how you think, act, feel, behave, and interact with others. Each individual can have a deeply personal experience, and it will be completely and totally different than anyone else will experience - if we allow ourselves to let it grow and expand our existence and our understanding of others and ourselves. It is our true self, the essence of our being that helps us to push ourselves beyond our current limitations to have the greatest experiences in our lives – and each time we push ourselves further, our experience will be greater than the last. It is truly a journey of self-discovery and every person's journey will be completely unique.
This is just the start of the journey and it will continue to grow and encompass you and all around you as it grows in you. You will become more in tune with the vibration of the universe and with others of like mind. You will be come more tolerant of other’s ways of spirituality and more accepting of their thoughts and ideas. You will become part of the universe.
