Indepth Physio Indepth Physio offers specialized physiotherapy services to dancers, folks with chronic pain, acute injuries and more. HAPPY DANCING!! :)

Our highly trained specialists will work with you on a manageable treatment plan, conveniently located in Calgary - email us to connect! INDEPTH PHYSIOTHERAPY- an INDEPTH physiotherapy service that caters specifically to Calgary dancers- novice or elite! Having been a dancer, I am familiar with the chaotic and highly demanding training regime that young dancers are expected to adhere to. Legs at 180 degrees, splits in every direction, dancing on the tips of your toes- these are just some of the things that are ‘normal’ for dancers and are often required as they progress in their training. I am a strong advocate that SPORT SPECIFIC rehab is essential in order to return the athlete safely to sport. Why not seek out a therapist that speaks the language of the sport, understands the training and has personal experience with the sport? - This is reason INDEPTH Physio exists. I am striving to bridge the gap between physio and return to dance; offering an on-site service that provides dance specific rehabilitation programs, direct communication with instructors and in-class observations to further assess dance technique. I want to encourage dancers to report injuries when they first occur and teach them self management strategies to prevent future injuries and promote the longevity of their bones and joints! Dance specific assessments, anatomy workshops and personalized flexibility & conditioning programs are just a few of the services INDEPTH physio aims to offer- and in the comfort and convenience of your own studio! So whether you’re trying to recover from an over-ambitious jetté, or twisted your ankle during a sequence of Buck Time Steps, INDEPTH Physio will be there to get you back in those shoes and up on that stage! Interested in having INDEPTH Physio come and assess/ treat the dancers and staff at your studio? Currently recovering from an injury and are interested in consulting Dani for a dance-specific rehab program? EMAIL DANI @ indepth.physio@gmail.com to set up an appointment today!!

- GRIPPING THE GLUTS TO TRY AND HOLD YOUR TURN OUT??
- Asymmetrical ankle range of motion?
- tucking the pelvis?
- gripping the front of the ankles & over-recruiting Tib Ant?
- poor weight placement in the feet?
- poor turn out control in the hips?
- snapping the knees back?
- rolling the feet in?
- did we mention GRIPPING THE GLUTS?! (**probably the worst of the all!)
These are just A FEW of the most common habits we can spot in just looking at a dancer’s DEMI PLIÉ. Just like the Rises 101 video, you would be AMAZED at how often we need to go back to basics even with the advanced/ intermediate dancers and do some “technique tweaking”. SO many things can go wrong in a plié that can lead to issues down the road....
Check out this week’s SOAPBOX video PLIÉ 101 and see if you can pick out some of these little habits on yourself-or your students!! Link here —-> https://youtu.be/IlY5vVtTNNU
SO GO GRANDE (OR DEMI!) IN THIS WEEK’S PLIÉ SPECIAL!
**AND FOR GOODNESS SAKE STOP GRIPPING YOUR GLUTS TO HOLD TURN OUT (it should be the DEEP hip rotators that do the work!) !! SPREAD THE WORD AND SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!!
Enjoy!!

EYE SPY WITH MY LITTLE RISE... Something that is not quite right! It seems so simple to do rises on two feet in parallel right? WRONG! Little do we realize all the little habits that we pick up along the way... Habits- that if not corrected- can lead to some horrible tendonitis’, ankle springs and even stress fractures. Habits that can prevent a lot of people from getting cleared for pointe work.
If it isn’t mastered on Demi pointe, why would we put these same ankles in a pointe shoe- a much smaller, LESS stable base of support?
Perfecting the two foot rise in parallel may seem simple but we challenge you to take a closer look at your own two foot rises and/or your student... you may be surprised by what you see....
ARE YOU...
A WOBBLER?
A SNAPPER?
A TWISTER?
A SCRUNCHER?
A ROCKER OR A ROLLER?
So before you get excited about getting up “on your TOEBOX” (aka your ), join me FIRST ON THE SOAPBOX this week as we look a little closer at some common rise deviations... It seems so simple but THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON THINGS WE NEED TO “CLEAN UP” in any or program....
WHICH RISE TYPE ARE YOU??

HOLD THE PHONES- OR SHOULD WE SAY “THE POINTE SHOES”!
Check out our latest video on —> Common Questions & Challenges with Pre-Pointe Programs!!
Interested in referring a class to be assessed for ? We LOVE it but also say- Hold that thought and check out our latest video first! It is filled with some juicy information that we find is important studios, teachers and parents are aware of before jumping into one of our pre-pointe programs. As health care professionals, we have certain standards that we need to see the dancer achieve before we can give them “medical clearance” for pointework. There are many milestones that are involved in a pre-pointe assessment that many people don’t realize can take some time to achieve. And unfortunately some of these things can’t be rushed. We can only progress the dancer so quickly.
Haven’t mastered two foot rises in parallel yet? Well we won’t be able to progress to one foot work...
Still struggling with balancing on one foot for 10seconds? How do you think they will do in a pointe shoe with a firm shank?!
Struggling with pelvic placement and holding rotation in their plies and basic barre work? They won’t have the control for centre floor...
Fatiguing with 10 rises on one foot at the barre? How do you think this lack of strength will help them get up on their pointe shoe box in centre floor?
We pride ourselves on our Pre-pointe programs and the standards we hold for same. We see HOW many issues can come from not having these foundations BEFORE getting en pointe. Many of the issues we see could have been prevented by refining some of these basic technical milestones first.
Check out our video to learn more about some of the challenges that can arise. LINK HERE & in bio—> https://youtu.be/3EAd20xVysg
TOMORROW WE LOOK AT RISES 101 and show you ALL of the types of TWO foot rises we see in our assessments. Check it out to gain some insider info into where we start with our (you will be amazed at how much can go wrong with such a simple exercise!)

Today mark’s Indepth’s COVID-VERSARY. 1yr ago today we put up a sign saying we were temporarily closed until further notice due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
It has been interesting to see this week, what day completely shifted the lives of small business owners. It is a day that none of us will ever forget. Little did we know how much would change in months to come... and now 1yr....
Shout out to all of you who had to pivot, shift, adapt, re-invent yourselves day in and day out- and perhaps continue to now- as things continue to unfold. There is light at the end of the tunnel. We have made it this far- we CAN and will keep going. We made it a year. We can do this.
So is it a “happy” anniversary- not really? But I will say I am happy to have had this past year over with but grateful in a sense of the changes it pushed me to make. Indepth would truly not be where it is today if it wasn’t for covid.
So as you reflect back on the past year, as exhausting as it might have been, was there a change for the GOOD that came about because of covid? Did it also push you to make changes in your life you wouldn’t have otherwise made? That’s what I think is worth celebrating.
So bittersweet “covid-versary” to you all. And here’s to finding those in even the most seemingly terrible circumstances.

WHAT TIME IS IT?? TIME TO GLUT RECRUIT!!
Last couple of weeks we have hopefully gotten “HIPPY” with it- not “TIPPY” with it and are starting to understand what proper hip stability should look like in standing.
This week we STEP IT UP (actually) and look at some of the muscles that are key with walking, stairs and stepping up properly. If you were TIPPING with last week’s exercises, try to master those first before attempting bigger movements as seen in this week’s video. Stair stepping and step ups are on the menu this week and yes, there’s a right and wrong way to “step up on it”!
Get out your hip level tape, and KEEP YOUR PANTS ON (again inside joke from previous videos) and STEP IT UP with this week’s exercise variation.
It’s time to GLUUUUUTT RECRRRUUUIIITT!!!

Ahhh yes.... “Square Peg Round Hole” Syndrome. I know this well. This may be the one type of syndrome we don’t typically learn in physio school but tend to find out about it sooner than later just from living life...
So what do you do when you find yourself willing something to happen that just doesn’t seem to want to work out? What do you do when despite all of your energy, re-attempts, brainstorming, re-routes, still do not seem to yield the results you desire?
STOP EVERYTHING AND JUST PRESS PAUSE.
Do not pass go.
Do not collect $200.
This my friends is the Universe saying, “Dude, appreciate the effort but I’m really trying to make it obvious for you that you just need to wait. Trust Me”.
I have been in this situation COUNTLESS of times (also currently in it). You know me- always have a project (or several) on the go. Always dreaming, always planning for the next thing. Well there have been many times where no matter how hard I freakin try, it’s just a serious case of “square peg in round hole syndrome” and I just need to leave it alone...for a bit...
Do not confuse this with giving up. This is just pressing pause. And you know what? There is usually good reason why something is not working out. Will you know WHY it’s not working out at the time? Likely not. But believe me, at some point down the road- maybe when it finally DOES work out- you will be grateful that it never ended up happening when you originally wanted it to. And you know what else? It will likely end up working out even BETTER than you had originally planned.
I will give you a prime example. [CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS]

GETTIN HIPPY & SPLITTY with it this week on !
Last week we looked at how to assess our own hip alignment in simple weight transfers. This week we take it one step forward (literally!) into a SPLIT SQUAT. Split squats are a GREAT pre-requisite for working up into a single leg squat. ONE leg stability is SO challenging so this is a great way to progress your squats gradually and ensure that you are transferring your weight properly along the way. I can’t tell you HOW MANY TIMES WE NEED TO RE-TRAIN PEOPLE’S SQUAT AND LUNGE TECHNIQUE!! Hips tipping, knees falling in, pelvic twisting, arches collapsing in.... SO many things can go wrong when there’s poor core & hip control! But SO preventable if you can assess your own hip alignment in these simple home exercises.
Check out this week’s progression and see if you can get SPLITTY with it! LINK HERE —-> https://youtu.be/K2yxJDC3y_g

GETTIN’ HIPPY (NOT TIPPY) WITH IT this week on !!
Did you know there is a proper way to set up your hips in a lunge? In a step up? Doing stairs? Even just transferring your weight from one leg to another? In this week’s soapbox video, we give you an easy hack of how to assess your own hip alignment in your workouts. Spoiler alert: You WILL have one hip that is weaker/ unable to keep the hips from tipping! This is SO important to retrain and teach the hips not to tip to prevent imbalances/ future injury. Having good hip stability is SO CRUCIAL to have in ANY weight-bearing activity- not to mention having EQUAL stability side to side.
It’s such an easy at home fix that EVERYONE should be “gettin hippy with it”!!
Check out the link here and check out how “tippy” you actually are!! —> https://youtu.be/KxiM3LyZLe8

“Oh you do physio? That’s where they put the buzzy machines on you right?” 🤦‍♀️
Every time I hear someone say this, a little piece of my physio soul dies a little bit inside.
How have we become the profession of the “buzzy machines”? How did physio come to this? Our college motto is actually “The Movement Specialists” yet how embarrassing to constantly be mistaken for having our “Masters in Buzzy Machines”. Lol. Yes I did 6.5yrs of post secondary school- one undergrad, one masters degree and paid $60K because I was inspired to master the art that is “Dr.Ho”. 😆
Now I know the clinics are not helping things. I know that there are some awesome physios out there that are NOT . They believe in using movement as a modality. They believe in empowering the patient. They remember WHY they went into physio school in the first place. They wanted to HELP people! They wanted to teach people about their bodies and help them move better. They want to keep the “physical” part in the “physical therapist”. If you are one of these physios, THANK YOU. This is why it is SO important to find a clinic that FITS YOU. That allows you TIME to educate your patients. TIME to teach the exercises to the patients yourself. Why should you give away the best part of our jobs to a kin? (No offence kin’s, but we need to take back our “movement specialist piece!”- we need to save the physiotherapist title!).
So I beg of you- all of you wonderful, exceptional physios out there who are trying to keep the movement piece in rehab alive, please do NOT get stuck in a clinic where you need to rely on modalities as a time saver. [CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS]

GO BIG OR GO PRONE- PART II! This week on we take our one step further in PRONE!! Be sure that you can master these basic exercises first before attempting any push ups!! (Most people struggle in holding proper alignment in a plank, which we usually need to retrain in clinic!)
