Dear Alberta teachers,
I have heard your struggles. In my therapy room, in my living room, in the emails I have received as a parent, always polite and professional, but offering small glimpses of the truth for those of us who can read between the lines.
I have seen the conditions you must work in, the overcrowded classrooms, the complex needs you must manage in a class of 30+ kids with little to no help. I have seen the negative impact this has on your students; most parents with a child in public education have seen what it’s really like.
The Alberta government wants us to believe that you don’t care about our children. I know this is a lie. I know that you wouldn’t do this job if you didn’t care, and I know that the children you teach are your priority.
As a therapist, I have the honour of working with wonderful teachers, hearing your stories, your hopes and struggles, and I know you care.
As the sister of a teacher, I have been in awe of the level of devotion and love that my sister has for her students, despite the challenges and stressors of the job, and I know in my heart that I could never do what she does, and most of us wouldn’t. I know she cares.
As a parent, I have volunteered in many classrooms, and I have witnessed firsthand a lot of the issues that Alberta teachers have been talking about for years. I have seen the crowded classrooms, the impact that insufficient assistance in handling classroom complexities has on all the children, and I have seen every teacher handle these challenges with grace and a smile on their face. For the children, because they care.
I know the messaging coming from the Alberta government is hurtful; it’s an insult to all of you, who devote so much of your lives and hearts to our children. I want you to know that I don’t believe them, I stand behind you, and I’m ready to support you in any way I can.
