Hi, I’m Charlie Martin (he/him, MSW), a Calgary-based therapist offering in-person and virtual counselling for individual, couples, and families in Alberta rooted in clarity, purpose and intention. Hi, I’m Charlie—a therapist, husband and father with a passion for helping individuals and couples strengthen relationships, overcome challenges and build more fulfilling lives. With a Bachelor of Scien

ce in Psychology from the University of Montana, a Master of Clinical Social Work from the University of Calgary and licensure through the Alberta College of Social Workers, I combine clinical expertise with lived experience. My approach is rooted in empathy, intentional living and a deep respect for each person’s unique story. What I Offer:

In-person and virtual counselling for individuals, couples, and families in Calgary and across Alberta. Areas of support include anxiety, stress, relationships, and life transitions. Outside the office, I’m usually adventuring outdoors with my wife, our two kids, and our lively golden retrievers—or unwinding through woodworking and a good book. These personal passions shape my belief that growth comes not just from working through hardship, but also from reconnecting with what brings us joy. Whether you’re seeking clarity, healing, or change, I’m here to walk alongside you—one intentional step at a time.

Spring is the season of fresh starts and new beginnings, symbolized by growth and new life. It’s a time when we’re encouraged to clean our homes and organize our lives. Spring isn’t just about decluttering your closets. It’s permission to release what’s weighing you down and tend to what actually matters.

You know self-care is important. But knowing and doing are two different things. Life gets busy, and somehow taking care of yourself ends up at the bottom of the list.

Here’s the truth: attending to your mental health isn’t selfish. It’s how you build the capacity to show up for everything else.

This spring, let’s focus on what to keep, what to release, and what needs your attention. Not perfection. Just small, intentional steps that create real change.

Canada is finally having a national conversation about men's health—and it's long overdue.

The federal government recently announced they're developing the country's first men's and boys' health strategy, acknowledging what many of us have known for years: men's health issues are too often overlooked, misunderstood, or ignored.

Here's what matters: Men avoid seeking help because of stigma. They delay care because vulnerability feels like weakness. And the cost of that silence shows up in delayed diagnoses, untreated mental health struggles, and preventable crises.

This strategy is a step forward. But you don't have to wait for federal policy to get support.

If you've been on the fence about therapy—whether for yourself, your relationship, or someone you care about—this is your reminder that seeking help isn't weakness. It's one of the strongest things you can do.

I offer free 15-minute consultations because I believe access to mental health support shouldn't have barriers. No judgment. No pressure. Just a conversation about whether therapy might be right for you. Book it here https://intentionalpathmentalhealth.janeapp.com

You're not alone if you've been taught that struggling means weakness.

For too many men, asking for help feels like admitting failure. But here's what that silence actually costs: higher su***de rates, untreated depression, relationships that suffer because vulnerability feels impossible.

Strength includes knowing when to reach out.

In my latest article, I break down why men face unique barriers to seeking support, the real cost of "toughing it out," and practical steps to start the conversation (even when it feels uncomfortable).

You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support. Small, intentional steps create real change.

The federal government just announced a new men's health strategy addressing gaps in mental health support, su***de prevention, and overall wellbeing for men across Canada.

This is an important step forward. Many men grow up being told to "tough it out," "man up," or "keep it together." The message is clear: real men don't show emotion. But the truth is, being strong doesn't mean staying silent. Taking care of your mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness.

In my practice, I see how these cultural expectations create real barriers. Many men hesitate to ask for help because they:

• Don't recognize the signs of mental health issues
• Think no one will understand
• Don't want to be seen as weak or incapable
• Believe they should handle everything on their own

This silence can lead to isolation, stress, and hopelessness. But here's what I hope this federal strategy emphasizes:

• Mental health support that meets men where they are
• Su***de prevention that goes beyond crisis intervention
• Permission to seek help before things become overwhelming
• Recognition that therapy is for growth, not just crisis

If you're a man who's been on the fence about reaching out for support, this is your reminder: you don't need to wait until things fall apart. Therapy can help you navigate stress, relationship challenges, workplace pressures, or simply create more space between reaction and response.

You deserve support. You deserve to feel better. And seeking help is one of the strongest choices you can make.

If you're in Calgary or anywhere in Alberta and want to explore what therapy might look like for you, I offer a free 15-minute consultation. No pressure, just a conversation about what you're navigating and whether counselling might be a fit.

How do you know when it’s time to consider couples therapy?

Many couples assume counselling is only for relationships in crisis, but that isn’t always the case.

How do you know if a therapist is the right fit?

This is one of the most common questions people ask when they start looking for therapy. And it makes sense.

When people search for a therapist, they often focus on things like age, gender, or credentials. While those factors can matter for some people, they're usually not what determines whether therapy will actually help.

What matters most is something much simpler: the relationship.

When therapy works well, there is trust, curiosity, and respect between the therapist and the client. The therapist takes time to understand your goals, avoids making assumptions, and approaches the work with empathy and humility.

Good therapy takes time to work. And finding the right therapist sometimes means trying a couple of sessions to see if the right fit feels right.

I recently wrote a blog post about how to find the right therapist, including:

• What people often get wrong when choosing a therapist
• Signs a therapist might be a good fit
• How long you should try therapy before deciding

If you're considering therapy—or supporting someone who is—I hope it's helpful.

Many people that suffer from anxiety spend a lot of time in their heads. Logically. One way to counter this is intentionally focusing on the 5 senses. Especially if your senses are tuned in to pleasant things. Spring time in AB is a great time to lean into this practice.
