May is National Physiotherapy Month. In honour of this month, we would like to share with you some of our Physiotherapists.

Meet Andrew Ahn, Physiotherapist

What inspired you to become a physiotherapist?

We all have role models and people who inspire us. As cliché as it sounds, my parents were my biggest influence. After my mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2015, I saw them struggle to access the care they needed to manage it. This was a driving force for me. I wanted to become a physio for a few reasons. Primarily to help manage my mother's Parkinson's Disease and to ensure she always receives the care she needs. Secondly, to provide a collaborative approach to rehab and to empower my clients with all the tools they need for a successful recovery!

What do you love most about being a physiotherapist?

There are so many reasons I love being a physiotherapist. If I had to pick one, it would have to be the impact we can have on our clients. Our impact can be from a social, emotional, physical and/or psychological aspect. It is always so satisfying to co-create milestones/goals with clients and watch them absolutely crush them during their rehab journey. To empower people with confidence to manage their injuries but also to help prevent future injuries is one of the most gratifying aspects of being a physio.

1. What are you looking forward to in 2022?

From a personal perspective, I look forward to some vacation time! As someone that loves to travel, the pandemic has put a damper on my plans. However, now that things are loosening up around the world, I look forward to travelling!

From a professional perspective, I look forward to expanding my skillset to help my clients achieve their rehab goals and more. Anyone that knows me, knows that I am a true nerd when it comes to physio. I love reading new articles, taking continuing education courses, and trying out new techniques. The current courses that I am working on are Mulligan Mobilization with Movement and my Certified Strength and Conditioning!

To learn more about Andrew, check out his bio https://www.lifemark.ca/Aspen or to book an appointment with him, call our clinic at 403-242-9001.

Meet Drew Hutchinson, Physiotherapist

What inspired you to become a physiotherapist?

As a young athlete, there were a few injuries that I had to deal with and recover from. I had seen chiropractors, athletic therapists, and massage therapists for a reoccurring shoulder injury. After seeing the Physiotherapist for an injury I found that he was the only one to take the extra time and effort to discover my motivations, motivate me/ educate me on how to heal my muscle tear and strengthen it appropriately. He also educated me on the right prehab work to do so that my reoccurring shoulder injury would not return. After seeing this therapist I did not have another shoulder irritation during my entire varsity sports experience with heavy training. I knew that Physiotherapy was what I wanted to do after meeting this physiotherapist and seeing the impact he had.

What do you love most about being a physiotherapist?

Being able to see the change that happens in people's mood and demeanor when hopelessness turns into empowerment related to their injury. When I can modulate their pain levels and show them movements that directly reduce the pain they have been dealing with for months.

What are you looking forward to in 2022?

I'm very excited to take a course that is run by Shella Woodhouse on vestibular therapy. This is a field that fascinates me and I love treating these patients because in one session we can often completely alleviate the patients dizzy symptoms. Talk about making an immediate change in someone's quality of life!

We are now open Sundays from 10am to 3pm to serve you better!

The physiotherapist working Sundays is Andrew Ahn.

Andrew was born and raised in Edmonton, where he completed both a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology (with distinction) and a Master’s of Science in Physical Therapy. Throughout his academic career Andrew worked as a Kinesiologist & Social Media and Marketing Coordinator, volunteered at the Steadward Centre and was a part of the University of Alberta’s track team.

Andrew is a passionate and dedicated therapist who aims to use his experience, newest research evidence and his practical knowledge to help people prevent or recover from injuries. He wishes to help people surpass their pre-injury levels with the goal to have them lead a healthier lifestyle. To achieve success, Andrew prioritizes educating patients about their injuries, using manual therapy techniques, and creating individualized exercise programs to have clients take an active role in their pre/rehab journey. Ultimately, his goal is to have patients leaving the clinic with a plethora of tools to help them with everyday stressors and to overcome any adversity that they may face.

When Andrew is not in the clinic, you can find him cheering for the Edmonton Oilers, at the gym, snowboarding or hiking and/or hanging with out with friends (responsibly, of course). Additionally, Andrew is always interested in reading the newest research and taking additional courses. He is currently striving to complete his certificate in becoming a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
