The LiftWerx Flag of Adventure has been raised at one of the most historic buildings in the Western World: the Roman Colosseum! Proudly bearing the Flag is Omar Irfan, who works for LiftWerx as a Full Stack Developer.
The Colloseum is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is the largest standing amphitheatre in the world. Construction began nearly 2,000 years ago, under the Emperor Vespasian in AD 72. It was completed only eight years later in AD 80. It's interesting to note that today, large stadiums of this magnitude often require the same amount of time to construct, which is a testament to Rome's highly-organized society and technology at that time.
Constructed of limestone, marble, tuff, and brick-faced Roman concrete, the amphitheater could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators at various points in its history, having an average audience of some 65,000. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles including animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, dramas based on Roman mythology, and even mock sea battles. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era.
Because of the ruined state of the interior, it is no longer practical to use the Colosseum to host large events; only a few hundred spectators can be accommodated in temporary seating. However, much larger concerts have been held just outside, using the Colosseum as a backdrop. Performers who have played at the Colosseum in recent years have included Ray Charles (May 2002), Paul McCartney (May 2003), Elton John (September 2005), and Billy Joel (July 2006).
At LiftWerx, we are proud to employ a high-performing team of people who have a zest for life and adventure. Thanks to Omar for Raising the Flag!
