ASK A PRACTITIONER 235 - BEFRIEND THE NOISY DARK
We all have a dark side. Sometimes it is very noisy with sounds and ideas that may frighten us. So, we tend to reject it.
Here’s the thing… “that which we resist persists”. In fact, the more time we spend hiding or rejecting our dark sides, the more we actually strengthen the sense of separation we feel from ourselves & one another; making the dark darker.
Where I am right now, a festival is happening, in celebration of which, people lay out daily offerings of gratitude and honour to the gods. These are placed in temples, doorways, street corners, and in front of statues of gods. They are even placed in front of the statues of “dark” gods — which may seem odd… why would anyone want to honour and show gratitude to dark forces and energies?
The answer is, to promote balance. This is the same reason that black and white cloth may be wrapped around statues… to remind us that a union of the dark and light exists in all things.
We will never feel free, nor rise to our full power, unless we make peace with our demons. But how do we do that? By befriending them. By offering them thanks for the energy they bring (though they may need some redirection), and by asking them (ourselves) what they (we) need to feel safe and well. Once we have made peace with our darkness, it then becomes our ally, and its powers can be put to better use than for disruption and chaos.
In other words, we must begin a practice of loving and honouring ourselves - ALL of ourselves, in order to truly feel the Truth.
What is the Truth? That we are all, at our core, regardless of how much space the darkness may have taken up until now, ‘perfect, whole and complete’. We are all one with that power in the universe that is Love in action. What we call darkness is usually just a misguided impulse within us that is trying to protect us. By loving it, by making our whole selves safe and welcome, we begin to tame it and balance is restored.
