I am part of a committee of white-identifying Somatic Experiencing Practitioners in BC who are concerned by the lack of diversity in the SE Professional Training and the impact this has on the greater community of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour seeking SE Therapy. Please consider donating to a scholarship fund to encourage the enrollment of more BIPOC students for the upcoming Vancouver SE training.

Fellow SE enthusiasts and supporters; we need your help. Do you want to be a bett… Catherine Allen needs your support for SE-Diversity-Scholarship-Vancouver

Sleep is key to staying healthy during this pandemic, and recovering more quickly if we happen to contract COVID-19. Great information from local sleep scientist Dr. Glenn Landry with Circadian Rhythm and Sleep.

Healthy sleep is the mask we wear from within.

The BC Government announced a four-phase plan this week to slowly return British Columbians to our ‘new normal’ while we wait for a COVID-19 vaccine. Included in phase 2 of this plan is a return to in-person counselling in mid-May with the caveat providers assess the risk level and protect themselves, and their clients, accordingly.

As a touch practitioner, I am in prolonged, close contact with most of my clients during seated and table touch work. The recommendation with this level of contact is both myself and my clients wear non-medical masks. Knowing the importance of the social engagement system in co-regulation and how a mask would obstruct view of one of the most important parts of this system, the mouth (smiling and laughing), I am going to delay opening my practice to in-person clients until some time in June. In the meantime, I will continue to support clients remotely through online sessions.

Thank you to all my clients for their patience as we gently shift back towards re-connecting in person. Be wise, be well.

I've posted my first video on YouTube! In it I provide a couple of simple, self-touch somatic exercises to calm the mind, body and soul during this time of uncertainty.

I created this for my SE clients who I am unable to see in the office for in-person sessions but I happily share it here with you.

A couple of Somatic Experiencing exercises for self-support during this time of world transition.

Received this invitation this morning to participate in a research survey on adversity and COVID 19. Stephen Porges is the developer of the Polyvagal Theory, which is part of the foundation of Somatic Experiencing (SE). If you've got about 20 minutes to spare, it would help these amazing researchers out.

Dear members of the TSRC network,

Our research group has launched a study to better understand mental health and coping during the ongoing pandemic. If you would consider sharing the brief description and link below with any of your networks, we would appreciate it:

Researchers from Indiana University, in collaboration with Dr. Stephen Porges, are interested in your perceptions of and reactions to the COVID-19 virus. Please help us by completing measures about you, how you have dealt with adversity in the past, and how you are coping with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, on World Mental Health Day, I celebrate all the astounding clients I have had the privilege of working with and all those I have yet to meet. You constantly amaze me with your courage, your curiosity and your willingness to go in to the dark places to find the light. It is an honour to do this work with you.

Did you know counselling is currently unregulated in British Columbia? There is a BC counselling association for members, but who is protecting the public from insufficiently trained professionals?

A psychology professor has started a walk-in mental health clinic on the University of British Columbia's Kelowna campus.
