It was a very special and humbling night last night at the Campbell River Spirit Awards hosted by the CR Division of Family Practice. Sophia and her team were awarded the Excellence in Education and Competency Award- voted on by our local Family Physicians. After 13 years running Active Living Physiotherapy to make a difference in patient's lives and move the Physiotherapy Profession forward, this was such an honour!
Here is Sophia's acceptance speech:
"This award- for education and competency- belongs to all of us at Active Living Physio. We all embody the value of education.
Our education mission started over 10 years ago and some of you may remember me presenting at physician rounds. Today, education is woven into everything we do: from one-on-one patient care education, to our education and exercise classes, to our clinical placements for UBC physiotherapy students or future young physios job shadowing, to our monthly in-services. And, of course our regular communication with you- our physicians- about our shared patients.
True to our name, Active Living Physio, “Active Living” really is our mantra. Everything we teach comes back to that core value.
Since I have your attention and we’re speaking of education I’d like to leave you with one key takeaway:
Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have—for prevention, for recovery, and for lifelong health—and we are likely under-dosing our prescription for many patients. As a health care professional- use your influencing power, and regularly emphasize the value of exercise and activity -especially for our children, the next generation.
Thank you again—for this recognition, for your collaboration, and for the trust you place in Physiotherapists every day to look after the musculoskeletal system of your patients. It truly means a lot."
