🎨Holding onto the last colors of fall.
Our Rec Rangers group spent the morning exploring trails, painting stones, and spotting salmon — embracing nature with curiosity, laughter, and choice.
🍂As autumn fades, our Rec Rangers leave a little color behind.
At Spark, every moment is a chance to explore, express, and grow — through play, creativity, and connection.

🥬🥪For some children, especially those with sensory sensitivities or selective eating habits, food can feel overwhelming — in texture, smell, or even just how it looks. That’s where edible sensory play comes in.
At Spark, we believe that play is how we learn — and sometimes, how we grow to love food too. 💛
In our sessions, we thoughtfully design themed food play that encourage curiosity and confidence. Whether it’s digging for worms in chocolate “dirt” or discovering treasures in jiggly jelly, every squish and giggle is a small but meaningful step forward.
Here’s a taste of what we’ve been creating lately:
💎 Treasure Jelly World – glittery green jelly filled with gems, marshmallows, and sprinkles
🍫 Dirt & Worms – chocolate pudding soil with cookie crumbs and gummy worm treasures
🌊 Beach Party – smooth applesauce “ocean,” cookie crumb “sand,” and silly fish rings under parasols.
By offering fun, low-pressure opportunities to engage with food through touch, smell, and visual exploration (without any expectation to eat!), these activities help children:
🍓 build trust and positive associations with different foods
🧠 strengthen sensory regulation
🖐️ develop fine motor and exploratory skills

Last Friday, our Rec Rangers Group set off for another outdoor adventure by the Quinsam River — a space we love for its calming sounds, muddy trails, and glimpses of salmon returning home 🐟
But this time, nature had a surprise for us… THREE real bears appeared across the river, calmly walking along the shoreline.
We stayed safe and quiet — and our little explorers watched in awe.
At Spark, we believe in learning that’s real, sensory, and filled with curiosity. These moments aren’t just exciting — they help build focus, body awareness, self-regulation, and confidence in a way no classroom ever could.
🦋Nature teaches best.
🧡 And our kids are always ready to learn.
Spark moments happen when curiosity meets courage 🌿🧡
Thank you, nature, for the surprise guests — and thank you, Rec Rangers, for being brave, kind, and calm.

🐟This Weekend in Campbell River…

Looking for something fun (and wild!) to do with the family this weekend?
Head over to Quinsam River Hatchery for a walk along the river and a chance to spot salmon, eagles… and maybe even a bear or two! 🐻🦅
It’s a great way to slow down, explore nature, and spark some wild wonder 🌿✨

🗓️ When: Friday, September 6
🕗 Time: 8:00 am – 3:30 pm
📍 Where: 4217 Argonaut Rd, Campbell River
💰 Cost: Free
🧭 What: Self-guided outdoor experience along the river

🧠 Why It’s More Than Just a Walk
Outings like this do more than entertain — they offer a quiet, natural way for children to regulate their bodies, calm their minds, and engage their senses.
🧘‍♀️ The sounds of flowing water support sensory calm
👀 Watching salmon swim encourages focus and visual tracking
🚶‍♂️ Uneven trails help build balance and body awareness
🧠 Asking questions (“Where are they going?”) nurtures curiosity and confidence
At Spark, we see the power of these simple moments — the ones where children feel safe, connected, and free to explore at their own pace.
✨ Sometimes the best kind of learning doesn’t happen inside four walls.

⚠️ Bear Safety Tip
Bears are often active near the hatchery this time of year. Be “bear smart”:
🗣️ Walk with a friend and make noise
👣 Stick to open trails
📣 Speak calmly and stay visible
📸 Don’t forget your binoculars, water bottle, and curiosity!

You might have heard about the free weekly yoga happening in Robert Ostler Park, but did you know that youth can join, too? Teens 16 years and older can attend alone, but anyone as young as 12 can come with a responsible adult. These classes are designed to be gentle on the body and suitable for most beginners. So grab your yoga mat and head over to the park on Tuesdays between 5:30 and 6:30 pm ✨

We all know that yoga is excellent for improving strength, balance, and coordination, but it has so many positive effects on the mind, too. There’s evidence that yoga practices can help children and youth on the autism spectrum to become more resilient and develop their self-regulation skills. Wow!

Please note that these classes are weather-dependent. Finally, the last day of classes will be August 26th, and there will be an additional family-friendly class from 4:15 - 5 pm! There’s no minimum age, and children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Check out the flyer to find out who’s teaching each and for contact info. And remember to breathe! 🧘
