Bow Valley Palliative

Bow Valley Palliative We depend on our community volunteers and fundraising initiatives.

Providing palliative and grief supports within the Bow Valley and Improving the end of life experience for individuals and their families following a life-changing diagnosis. In the spring of 2014, a group was called together under the leadership of Lynn Cooper with the goal of establishing a hospice in the Bow Valley. The group continued to meet regularly and the vision expanded to include the development of a “compassionate community”, working alongside the current health and social services to support those with a life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout their journey. Under the group’s direction, the “Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley” (PCSBV) was conceived. Development of a compassionate community soon grew to include the idea of constructing a palliative care house in Canmore for Bow Valley communities. The PCSBV is now a vibrant registered charity with a new Board of Directors charting that course for the future.

This helpful guide from Alzheimer's Society outlines how dementia may progress over time — while reminding us that every journey is different.

As dementia changes, the need for support changes too. What matters most is meeting the person where they are, and helping them live as well as possible in each stage — something we strive to do every day through our programs and community support.

This reflection from The Children's Grief Foundation of Canada beautifully reminds us that children (and adults) can feel sadness and still experience moments of lightness. Joy doesn’t mean grief is gone, and grief doesn’t mean joy is not allowed.

Both can exist in the same moment. Both are real. Both deserve space. 💛

𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞. Different types — including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies — can show up in very different ways.

Learning to recognize these signs helps us respond with greater understanding and compassion, and reminds us not to dismiss changes that may need attention. This visual guide is a helpful starting point for awareness and early understanding.

𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐚 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 — 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧.

This reflection, shared by The Children's Grief Foundation of Canada, reminds us that a child may feel okay one moment, then sad, angry, confused, or deeply missing someone the next.

This is how grief often shows up for kids. It moves. It shifts. It comes and goes. One moment can feel light, another heavy — sometimes all in the same day — and that is okay.

There is no “right” way for a child to grieve, and no timeline they need to follow. What matters most is feeling supported and safe to feel whatever comes.
