September is Arthritis Awareness Month.

According to Arthritis Society Canada, 1 in 5 Canadians live with arthritis, a collection of conditions affecting joints and other tissues. It causes pain, restricts mobility and diminishes quality of life.

Arthritis can be caused by underlying health problems, long-term repetitive activity (e.g. desk work), or simply the anatomy of the wrist.

Massage therapy can help. Learn how in this article from Arthritis.ca: https://arthritis.ca/living-well/2018/using-massage-therapy-to-treat-arthritis-pain

Experiencing muscle spasms? Muscle jolts or spasms can be painful and unpredictable. Massage therapy can help.

Spasms can be caused by many things: muscle fatigue, dehydration, stress, high-intensity exercise, improper sitting posture, and more.

Massaging the affected area can help alleviate pain, reduce tightness, and improve circulation. Your massage therapist may apply pressure using their fingers, elbows, or knuckles to defuse trigger points. There are a variety of techniques depending on the severity and frequency of spasms.

You can also self-massage the area before you can book in for your next appointment!

Infant massage is a nurturing practice that involves gentle massage, stretching, and communicating through touch using certain techniques. Some benefits include:

💛 Enhanced Bonding: Through touch, caregivers and infants strengthen their emotional connection, fostering trust and security.

💛 Physical Development: Massage promotes healthy physical development by stimulating circulation, improving muscle tones, and aiding digestion.

💛 Stress Reduction: Just as in adults, massage helps reduce infant stress levels, leading to a more relaxed and content disposition, which can also help with colic.

💛 Improved Sleep: Regular massage has been shown to improve sleep quality in infants, which benefits their overall health and development.

💛 Promotes Body Awareness: Through massage, babies become more aware of their bodies, which can positively affect their sensory and motor development.

Ever wonder what those marks are after myofascial cupping?

Cupping may leave temporary light to dark red or blue marks on the skin. These are caused by the suction of the cups and will disappear in 5 to 10 days.

Contrary to what you may think, cupping does not hurt. That said, you may experience mild discomfort if you're tense during treatment, and it may feel odd if it's your first time.

Stay hydrated after your massage therapy appointment! 💧

Massage therapy promotes the circulation of the blood and lymphatic system. During a massage, your therapist works out any muscle tension, which releases metabolic waste.

Drinking water replenishes lost fluids, aids in healthy circulation, and helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and organs after treatment.

Staying hydrated can be especially important if you receive deep tissue massage, as the increased intensity can cause further dehydration.

So, please listen to your practitioner and drink water. 💧
