I’m a proud Canadian!

This photo was taken during the first C**t starting competition I participated in. I was happy to represent with a Canadian flag then, still am today. In the world today, there is a growing divide between people in society. Especially in the United States and Canada. I believe what is right is somewhere in the middle of all the politics. I wish we could detach from this polarizing system and approach life and each other with an unbiassed perspective. The way I train horses directly reflects the person I try to be. I strive to be kind and fair, and take a horse for who they are on the day and in the moment. I fall short all the time in various ways but try to be a good person. Im grateful there is so many good people in the world today, especially here in Canada. Im grateful for those who try to make the world a better place by being kind and fair. Being a “good person” is not defined by politics, religion, skin colour, or sexual orientation. If we can look past those things and take a person for who they actually are it is amazing how many wonderful people there are all around us. Canada promotes the values of diversity and I love that. Cheers ya’ll and be good people!

Blast from the past, and definitely worth the watch!
There are horses and mules that stand out to have helped mould me into the trainer I am today. Wrangler was one of those horses.

First Day, First Sessions, First Rides

Some times its fun to challenge my self. Today we got two mules in and wanted to see just what we could get done. These mules have been well handled and are ready to get a foundation laid. We assessed how that handled when pressured up and tried to help them move out better. then rode them briefly in the round pen before hauling out for a big trail ride in the bush.

I am no bronc rider, but I have crawled on a few in my day!

Huckle Berry Blast!

Finally got to editing this wonderful trip. Pack trips in the mountains are always a highlight of the summer, you never know what adventure they have in store. It is great for the c**ts, the mind, and the soul. Jaque was a lot of fun to have around, this video shows her great sense of humour. I love that my boy linden can come on these adventures too. We had no idea that we were going to run into soooo many huckleberries, I have never seen anything like it.

Lead Changes with Nifty

Lead changes can be a very challenging and a frustrating maneuver. I remember a time that I thought there was no way I would ever be able to teach a horse to change leads. I didn't even know what it was supposed to feel like. Working with trainers I look up to has really helped me gain an understanding of the lead change. It has been a slow learning process, but here is a couple exercises that have helped me teach horses the propper mechanics needed. I have had many months of training on Nifty to get her to this point, and there is many months to go before she will be a proficient lead changer. Good luck with your ponies!

* the first exercise is actually a counter canter exercise. I called it counter bending.

Ride number 2 on this five year old mare!

Here I demonstrate some things I like to do in the first ride or two on these c**ts. My goal in the first couple rides is to get a horse to be able to move out freely, and start following a feel. In this session, we already got this mare into a walk, trot and lope. And now we’re working on a little bit of teaching her to follow that feel on the halter and move off the leg. It was a great session overall and I look forward to the rest of my time on this filly.

I’m super excited to announce that I will be travelling up to Valleyview Alberta to do a clinic! If you are up in that area, please sign up and join the fun. This clinic will benefit anyone looking to be a better horseman or horse woman. I encourage everyone attending to come with things that they want to learn, and I will critique them and help them overcome their personal hurdles.

In 2023 I rode Jeffery in Al Dunning’s clinic in Alberta here. Al and his students have garnered over 57 world and reserve world titles.

The first day I had ridden one of my horses and definitely took some things away to use. We were having a Q&A that night, I asked him if he had ever trained a mule. To which he looked at me and said “Oh, you’re the mule guy, I’ve heard about you “. He told a couple fun mule stories after that.

On the second day I was riding Jeffery before my session and he was feeling pretty good, so I decided to just stay on him and use him. He definitely was turning heads. When I was working on my turn around with him he said “well… let’s see him turn”. After I spun him Al said “well that was cute, looks pretty good”. It was a privilege to ride in front of such an esteemed horseman, and to do it on a mule that could spin a hole in the ground was the cherry on top.

I sold Jeffery a couple years ago and he’s now happily living out his life on a small farm in the eastern United States.

Starting a big group of c**ts together!

Me and primrose.horsemanship joint up with a bunch of our youngsters. Over the years training at my place has moved from a cookie cutter process to searching for desired responses from the horses in different ways. There are so many different methods and they all work, and they all fail. I have a few goals… one I want free movement, two help them to release any tension they are carry, and three show them there is times they can be comfortable under pressure.
This was a fun opportunity for my intern Faith to put a first ride on my two year old c**t Tater. It was a great session for both Faith and the c**t. Shout out to Fleetwood Farms Quarterhorses for producing this great c**t.

The lineup of mules never ends ha ha. My pen is currently a 50-50 split between client mules and client horses. Every animal has something different to teach you, long ears or short. While I wouldn’t choose a mule in every situation, I do enjoy working with these critters.
