This fall has been a great one, getting to cover many miles on different mules and c**ts. Most of those miles I have had my current intern Faith along with me. She is a great help in the c**t starting pen! I have seen lots of growth in her confidence and ability to train different styles of horses. We have many more adventures we are yet to go on. Cheers Faith 🍻

What a whirlwind of a weekend! We got the mules out to the mountains a couple times going on some adventures. I have been carrying a bighorn sheep tag in my pocket for the last 5 years. Alberta is unique because it is one of the only places in the world you can buy a general sheep tag over the counter. Here a ram has to meet certain size requirements to harvest them, making buying a sheep tag easy but being successful very difficult. I did not expect it to happen this weekend but it did and man was it ever an amazing experience.

People often ask me how did you decide to ride a buffalo?
Well it all started when I was a kid, I saw a picture of an old cowboy dragging calves to a branding fire aboard a longhorn steer. I decided I was going to do that one day. As a young adult I bought an old team roping steer. I halter broke him and was riding him in two weeks. It all blossomed from there, I started performing at fairs and rodeos with him. And I did indeed drag calves at a few Brandings! I always tell people naturally the next step from riding a longhorn is a buffalo.
My longhorns name was Jasper. I had him from the time he was 2, till his 8 year old year. Last year while hauling to a fair he got injured and had to be put down. We had a great time together over the years traveling all over western Canada. One of our signature parts of the specialty act I did with him was to race all the kids. Jasper was one of the hardest, fastest running steers that his previous owners had. As I rode him he slowed down and so in our races the kids stood a good chance haha. One of the things I hold close to me to this day is in Jaspers last race my youngest two kids got to race him for the first time.
Cheers Jasper 🍻 may you live fat and happy in the pastures in the sky my friend.

Chase your dreams!

I have no regrets about choosing the path I am on. When it comes to training I now realize I chose the long path to some degree. I have been taking a full string of outside horses for training since I was 16 and still have a pen full today. I grew up in a horse training family and that gave me the foundation to what I have become, but I haven’t rode under any trainers in particular. The down side to not working under others is not having the opportunity to ride horses that can help teach me feel, not having a coach to critique and help me see moments where I get it or am close to getting things, and not being in an environment that shows the culture of various disciplines.

As I have matured and become more established I have valued the moments I can spend with those I look up to in the horse world. For me part of the struggle is finding the balance between riding client horses to keep food on the table, spending time with my family, building and working on my arena/property, a bit of recreation, and furthering my education. So it is understandably a slow process while weighing in all those other things.
I love the precision, adrenaline, and beauty that surrounds the cowhorse, and reining events. I make it a priority to try and keep a personal horse on the go that I can get to the next level, pushing in the direction of those disciplines. Showing Kinky in Canadas Top Ranch horse was a great opportunity to see where my horses and skills are at! I was excited to feel Kinky’s lead changes and how well she executed them. I definitely have takeaways to refine for the next show.

My advice to the young up horsemen and horsewomen is find those trainers you love and admire. Dedicate yourselves the them and their programs.

Intern opportunities are amazing. I love taking on interns because I get to see knowledge hungry, talented individuals get on the educational fast track. At my place interns get to ride such a large variety of horses in their time here it gives a very comprehensive understanding of how different horses think! If you are interested in the opportunity to intern at my place, message me, we will not have any openings until next spring, but it is a fun opportunity that is very educational!

I do specialty acts with my buffalo all across western Canada! The one show I talked my good friend Shayde Primrose into riding my wild beefalo out of the bucking chute. It was wild, and western! Memories made and great times had.

We rode some horses to the top of the mountain the other day! Are you scared of heights?
