As we settle into the spring season it is a reminder that our diet and routines also need to change. Below is some information from Dr. Watts on some lovely teas to help move our digestion after this long lingering winter
“In Ayurveda, warm, spiced teas are more than just comforting, they are active tools for balance. Carefully chosen herbs and spices can awaken digestion, gently energise the body, and help clear the stagnation that often accumulates during the colder months. Unlike cold or heavy drinks, these teas work with the body’s natural rhythms, supporting vitality while calming the mind.
By incorporating a few mindful tea rituals each day, it’s possible to harness the restorative power of herbs and ease into spring with renewed energy and clarity.
Warming, Digestive Teas:
The key is to choose light, warming, and mildly stimulating ingredients. Spices commonly used in Kapha-balancing teas include:
Ginger – to stimulate digestion and circulation
Cinnamon – to gently warm and support metabolism
Cardamom – to lighten heaviness and aid digestion
Cloves – to act as an antimicrobial
Fennel seeds – to calm bloating and support gut health
Even small amounts of these spices steeped in hot water can make a noticeable difference in how your digestion feels and how energised you feel throughout the day.
Simple Spring Tea Recipes:
Here are a few easy blends to try:
1. Ginger & Lemon Tea
1–2 slices fresh ginger
1 cup hot water
Juice of ½ lemon
Optional: a pinch of black pepper or cinnamon
Steep ginger in hot water for 5–10 minutes, add lemon, and sip slowly. This combination awakens digestion and adds a bright, energising flavor.
2. Fennel & Cardamom Tea
1 tsp fennel seeds
3–4 crushed green cardamom pods
1 cup hot water
Simmer gently for 5–7 minutes. Fennel and cardamom help reduce bloating while gently stimulating metabolism.
3. Spiced Spring Blend
½ tsp grated ginger
½ tsp cinnamon
2–3 cloves
1 cup hot water
Steep for 5 minutes and strain. This warming, aromatic tea is ideal for morning or mid-afternoon when you need a gentle energy boost.
Tips for Seasonal Balance:
Drink teas warm rather than cold, cold beverages can increase Kapha qualities.
Keep portions moderate, Ayurveda recommends sipping throughout the day rather than consuming large amounts at once.
Pair teas with light, fresh spring foods such as steamed greens, sprouts, and bitter or pungent vegetables to support natural detoxification.
Spring is a time of renewal. By incorporating simple, warming teas into your routine, you can support digestion, clear winter heaviness, and gently lift your energy. These small, mindful adjustments allow the body to move more comfortably from the stillness of winter into the vibrant rhythm of spring.”
