Today is Advance Care Planning Day in Canada - a reminder of the importance of sharing your wishes for future health and personal care.

At MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, we believe that advance care planning is one of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones. It’s about ensuring your voice is heard, your values are honoured, and your family has peace of mind knowing what matters most to you.

Take some time today to start the conversation — whether it’s writing down your wishes, naming a substitute decision-maker, or simply opening a dialogue with those closest to you.

Planning ahead isn’t about loss — it’s about love, clarity, and care. 💙

I knew last year Mother's Day would be a difficult day. I was thankful to find Jenni Brennan's "Mother's Day Grief Journal" - it helped to express the raw emotions and lift some of the heaviness from my heart.

In recent weeks, all the signs have crept back - the card displays, advertisements for the perfect gift, posts about how to celebrate.

I made sure to put this journal by my bedside as a reminder to reflect, acknowledge, create space for all the feelings, and most importantly to remember how blessed I was to have had such a wonderful mother.

On Thursday, Canadians will mark National Advance Care Planning Day. This day is part of a national awareness campaign encouraging individuals to reflect on and share their future health and personal care wishes. It emphasizes starting conversations with loved ones and professionals to define care preferences before a health crisis occurs, ensuring one's voice is heard.

We believe funeral service professionals play an integral role in sharing resources with families around advance care planning. People often think of certain parts of end-of-life planning. Perhaps they’ve created a will or a power of attorney, some have documented their wishes for funeral services, but often the piece about quality end-of-life care is left unaddressed or not discussed.

We encourage you to start the conversation.

The value of a visitation and funeral service goes far beyond tradition—they serve important emotional, social, and cultural purposes during one of life’s most difficult times.

Such events create space for remembrance, support, and the first steps toward healing. Even though they can be difficult, many people find them deeply meaningful and important in coping with loss.

Our Story

MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, locally owned and operated by Allison and Gail Swan, has served the Island community for over three-quarters of a century.

Situated on Ole King Square, the funeral home is only minutes away from Province House, the Confederation Centre of the Arts and the beautiful waterfront that is so much a part of the charm of Prince Edward Island’s capital city. The funeral home was founded in the early 1920’s by N.D. MacLean, who was the first licensed embalmer on Prince Edward Island. It is interesting to note that as early as the late 1800’s a funeral home was located on this site.

For a Life Worth Celebrating.
