Christmas baking – a holiday tradition that can serve to honour cherished family recipes and memories of little floured hands helping Nanny make cookies.

This recipe was taken from a cookbook of my Nanny Harper’s dating back to the early 1940’s. The cookies are always a hit with family and friends.

A wonderful reminder from the wise Dr. Ken Doka.

It's okay to choose the activities you want to participate in and to share with others that the holidays can be challenging when we're grieving.

The holiday season can feel especially challenging for families grieving the loss of a loved one.

Hospice Foundation of America offers compassionate guidance with their Three C's for Holiday Grief—helpful tips for navigating this season with grieving children and families:

1️⃣ Choose: Focus on the activities that feel meaningful to you, and it’s okay to say no to others.
2️⃣ Communicate: Share your feelings and holiday plans openly with your family. Honest conversations can foster understanding.
3️⃣ Compromise: Remember, everyone experiences grief differently. Create space for flexibility and mutual support.

What better thing to do on a storm day than cozy up with a good book?

Kudos to Dr. Sandy MacQuarrie and the late Sylvia Poirier for capturing the history of PEI’s ambulance service from 1905-2005.
To quote Dr. MacQuarrie: “The common thread weaving all of this together is the resolute commitment of those drawn to helping others.”

The MacLean Funeral Home custom 1966 Chrysler ambulance is featured, along with reflections from James Allen and Allison D. Swan and a host of other service providers that have graciously shared their stories and the history of ambulance service on PEI.

Our Story

MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, locally owned and operated by Allison and Gail Swan, has served the Island community for over three-quarters of a century.

Situated on Ole King Square, the funeral home is only minutes away from Province House, the Confederation Centre of the Arts and the beautiful waterfront that is so much a part of the charm of Prince Edward Island’s capital city. The funeral home was founded in the early 1920’s by N.D. MacLean, who was the first licensed embalmer on Prince Edward Island. It is interesting to note that as early as the late 1800’s a funeral home was located on this site.

For a Life Worth Celebrating.
