PEI politicians are preparing to return to the Legislative Assembly next week, and PEINU leaders Barbara Brookins and Kim Sears have been meeting with officials to discuss the issues that matter most to Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners.

Nurse retention was front and center in these meetings, with PEINU presenting clear, practical solutions to address why experienced nurses are leaving Health PEI.

The message is clear: retaining experienced nurses is key to ensuring Islanders have access to safe, stable, and sustainable health care.

🌿 Leadership from the Inside Out 🌿

This year’s Professional Development Day was all about leading with purpose and resilience.

Led by Kieran Maxwell from the Ontario Nurses' Association, members took part in interactive sessions exploring emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and leadership development, all tied to burnout prevention and advocacy.

Through workshops like Emotional Intelligence: The Foundation of Leadership and Resolving Conflict with Confidence, participants learned how self-awareness, curiosity, and communication can turn stress and conflict into opportunities for growth and connection.

The day wrapped up with Amplifying Your Inner Leader, inspiring nurses to focus on what they can control, influence, and witness, a grounded approach to sustainable advocacy and personal well-being.

Strong advocacy begins with self-awareness. Caring for ourselves is how we continue caring for others.

CFNU is leading the creation of a national council to implement nurse-patient ratios – a vital tool for the safety of both nurses and patients. The council will include government representatives, employers, academics and nurses’ unions.

“All across the country, this is the number one ask from nurses, and there’s a good reason for it,” said CFNU President Linda Silas. “Strong nurse-patient ratios respect the reality that nursing is a safety-critical industry, where decisions about staffing are made based on safety. That means that there are always enough nurses to give patients the best quality of care, just as there are always enough pilots to safely fly a plane.”

The creation of a National Council was the top recommendation that emerged from the National NPR Summit held in the fall of 2024.

“This council will be focused on implementation of nurse-patient ratios with an eye on nurse retention and wellness. Safe staffing models have proven to do just that – retain nurses. They are being brought into effect in British Columbia and Nova Scotia, and we know strong implementation is critical to success and to bringing safe staffing across the country,” Silas said. “We don’t need more studies – we need a concrete framework to bring this life-saving policy into all health care settings across the country.”

PEINU In The News - Union president says nobody is addressing issues that cause nurses to leave.

“Unfortunately, we have a health authority right now that’s entirely focused on recruitment," said Barbara Brookins, who spoke to CBC News on Wednesday during a professional development day held in Summerside for 100 Island nurses.

"It’s all about recruiting and trying to get people in here but nobody is addressing the issues that are in the workplaces that are resulting in nurses leaving."

Zellah Johnston, a registered nurse on P.E.I. for 48 years, said she’s “terrified” for the future of nursing and the health-care system.

“It’s not the profession that I went into 48 or 49 years ago, and I’m at the stage now in my life where I’m going to be actually laying in that bed at some point in time,” said Johnston.

“We’re struggling, we push ourselves to the brink. We come in on our days off, because we don’t want our co-workers to be running short, but then that takes a toll on our own health,” she said.
