The Canada Health Act Services Policy comes into effect today, rightly ensuring that medically necessary services are to be covered under provincial and territorial health insurance plans, whether provided by a physician or another regulated health professional such as a nurse practitioner.

“Nurse practitioners are a growing workforce with the potential to ease the primary health care crisis. Supporting this growth through structural changes that ensure nurse practitioners can work to their full scope within our public health care system is critical to filling the gaps in primary health care,” explained Linda Silas, CFNU president. “Including nurse practitioners in the Canada Health Act is a key step towards ensuring that everyone in Canada has access to the care they need when they need it.”

This afternoon we had the opportunity to meet with PEI Liberals Leader Robert Mitchell and health critic Gord McNeilly ahead of the spring sitting of the PEI Legislature. Our discussion covered several of the most pressing issues affecting PEI's Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners and the importance of listening to the experiences of our frontline workers to find solutions.

We outlined the urgent need for a proactive approach to support the retention of PEI nurses, including the critical importance of safe staffing ratios in our healthcare facilities and how Nurse Practitioners are key to the solution for improving access to care for Islanders.

PEINU appreciates the opportunity to discuss these critical matters. Honest discussion with all of our elected officials is essential to tackling these challenges, and we will continue to advocate for the voices of PEI's Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners within government.

Today is the Day of Action for Public Health Care!

This morning PEINU President Kim Sears participated in a press conference organized by the PEI Health Coalition to express concerns about the dangerous precedent being set by Alberta’s Bill 11 threatening public health care all across Canada. The Coalition is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney and Health Minister Marjorie Michel to protect Canada’s universal health care system and enforce the Canada Health Act.

The bill allows physicians to work in both the public system and a private-pay market, opening the door to a two-tier health care system. Although this is currently only happening in Alberta, the bill risks opening the door for the implementation of a U.S. system across Canada and could potentially worsen staffing shortages by draining staff from the public system, including nurses.

Want to take action? The Canadian Health Coalition has prepared a pre-written message to send directly to your MP and Health Minister Marjorie Michel: https://dayofaction.healthcoalition.ca/
