M’excuse me, why would I want to be a ZERO? 🤔

When working on a team in any setting, you want to avoid being a +1 or a -1 & aim to be a ZERO.

Read below for more info ⬇️

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

+1: Being EXTRA, an eager-beaver
- High energy
- Running around at a million miles per hour
- Trying to do everything yourself
- Stumbling over everyone
*Would ressemble an over-stimulated athlete

-1: Kicking your feet up in the corner
- Being lazy
- Not lifting a finger, if it doesn’t concern you
- Socializing more than working

ZERO: Be a fly on the wall with a bee mentality
- Read the room & react accordingly
- Help wherever is needed, even if it’s not ‘your task’ (i.e., move that chair, grab that banana, fill that bottle, etc, etc.)
- Keep your voice & energy controlled
- Have trust in your team & the people around you

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Be a ZERO.

I promise;
1- Everyone sees how valuable you are
2- You will be asked to return

Use all the advantages to make those advances.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Finding the balance between stress & rest is crucial for growth within your sport.

Making time for that massage is just as important as all those hours training.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Make the time. Book that massage.

Pre-event massage is often seen as a way to stimulate your athletes physically & mentally before a game. However,

WHAT DO YOU DO if your athlete is on energizer bunny-mode already? ⚡️

[Insert wind down techniques here]

As important as it is to stimule an athlete before a game, it’s also just as important to spot overstimulated athletes to treat them accordingly.

To prep an overstimulated athlete is to relax their nervous system, allowing them to tone in & focus properly on their sport. In others words, find a way to ground them in order to put them in the right head space.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Signs & symptoms of an overstimulated athlete:

- Frequent urination
- ⬆️ heart rate
- ‘Squirrelly’ behaviour 🐿️
- Repeating questions
- Inability to carry a simple conversation
- ⬆️ speed in speech
- Jittery

When charting at a game or sporting event, you want a system that is as easy, quick and as efficient as possible ✅

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

I use paper tablet. I’ve preloaded treatment forms and consent forms in the tablet as a PDF files so it’s easy to access. Then to chart, I ‘edit’ the file & use the compatible Remarkable pen to write the necessary items as required by the CMTO. Once I am done, the charts are stored within the tablet itself. If ever you needed to access a chart, you can return to the document on the tablet OR you can also login to your account on a computer & access it that way as well.

I personally LOVE this system. It’s ‘pen & paper’ but with a system that is able to safely store all my charts/documents. It’s very easy & light to carry. Quick to grab & chart or write notes as needed.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

What do you use to chart at a game or sporting event?

Always love learning more ways to make my life as easy as possible 🤓

Tips on how to add value to a medical team;

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

- Push that ego aside - there’s no room for it on the team

- Know you strengths and weaknesses

- Share your ideas, help brainstorm

- Don’t be afraid to give your professional opinion, even if it’s different than everyone else’s

- Ask for help when you need it

- Keep a light & positive attitude always

- Be a team player, even if it’s out of your scope - grab that water bottle, ice bag, banana, etc… help whenever and however you can

- Read the room & react accordingly

Timing is EVERYTHING when working w/ an athlete.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Did you know that there are 9 different type of sport massage? 🤯

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

1️⃣ Pre-event: 1-2 days prior to event/game (off-site)

2️⃣ Pre-event Warm-up: earlier in the day, before the event/game (on or off-site)

3️⃣ Pre-event Performance: within an hour before the event/game (on-site)

4️⃣ Inter-event: between event or during a game (on-site)

5️⃣ Post-event Cool-down: 1-2 hrs post-event/game, after athlete cool-down (on-site)

6️⃣ Post-event: same day as event/game, later at night (off-site)

Faster & more efficient recovery means;

1️⃣ The athlete can train harder which can improve the quality of their training

2️⃣ The athlete can do more work at each session, ⬆️ the quantity of the training sessions

3️⃣ The athlete will require less rest between training sessions, making the sessions more efficient

POST-game massage is a concept people seem to understand more.

Please keep in mind that when I say ‘receiving a massage after a game’, this is a treatment that is done 1-2hours IMMEDIATELY AFTER the game or event. Also known as a ‘post-game/event cool-down’.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

🚨THIS IS NOT A THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT, DO NOT CHALLENGE THE TISSUES.🚨

‼️Applying an aggressive treatment when the body is fatigued/vulnerable will result in the body perceiving the treatment as a threat and ⬆️ stress. This could cause an ⬆️ pain or promote the need for recovery from the treatment itself. ‼️

The athlete SHOULD NOT need recovery from this treatment, DO NOT BE TOO AGGRESSIVE.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Benefits of receiving massage treatments IMMEDIATELY AFTER a game:

- ⬇️ muscle pain & soreness
- ⬇️ muscle spasms
- ⬇️ muscle fatigue
- ⬇️ muscle tension
- ⬆️ venous & lymphatic return
- Help regulate hormones
- ⬇️ recovery time (faster than passive rest)
- Avoid severe temperature change which may lead to hypothermia
- Improve recovery process

When it comes to your athletes, ALWAYS stay as informed as possible.

Don’t wing it, know your stuff 🤓

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Here are a few elements to understand while working with an athlete:

- Athletes goals
- Sport assessments (know the sport to understand the physical demands needed by the athlete & common injuries to keep an eye out for)
- Athlete assessment (know medical history, problem areas, ROM, etc., etc.)
- Recognizing athlete burnout
- Training & game schedules
- Importance of growth/recovery periods
- The importance of timing for everything
- Communication (don’t be afraid to talk to the coach, trainers, or anyone else involved with that athlete - w/ consent from athlete to do so)
- Trial & error is a thing

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Any questions? Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask 🙃

CONDITIONING is:

“The process of training to develop & increase the body’s overall physical fitness needed for your sport or event”

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Massage therapy can help you maintain muscle health during your training in order to allow your body to better adapt to the physical demands required to achieve new levels of fitness and greatness.

What does maintaining muscle health look like?

- ⬇️ muscle tension/stiffness
- ⬇️ fascial restrictions
- ⬇️ muscle spasms/cramping
- ⬇️ trigger points (also known as ‘knots’)
- ⬆️ circulation to help muscles heal quicker
- ⬆️ ‘feel good’ hormones
- ⬆️ tissue elasticity

What is Sport Massage Therapy?

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Sport Massage Therapy is often geared to professional, competitive, or recreational athletes but, can also be an effective treatment for patients with non-sports-related injuries, chronic pain, or limited mobility. Rather than focus on the whole body, the massage therapist focuses on the areas of the body that are affected by the physical demands of training or competing. Specific massage techniques are applied within specific timing parameters with the purpose of enhancing performance and decreasing potential for injury. This therapy provides the physical support needed for an athlete to pursue and achieve their goals.

Why do you massage DURING a game?

- - - - - - - - - - - -

I constantly get asked,

‘Why would someone want to get a massage during a game? I always just want to go to bed after I get one’ 🤔

First off, a massage given during a sporting event is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than a massage you would receive to relax/unwind.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Benefits of receiving massage treatments DURING a game:

- ⬇️ muscle spasms/cramping
- Maintains ROM & flexibility
- Maintains muscle readiness/performance
- ⬇️ muscle holding patterns
- Minimizes muscle restrictions/stiffening
- ⬇️ muscles/tendon injuries
- Relieves muscle fatigue
- Ensures appropriate stimulation throughout the game
- Helps manage anxiety/stress related to the game
- Helps athlete focus/feel ready to perform throughout the game
- ⬆️ confidence
- Begins recovery process
