Words will never be able to describe the feeling that comes from witnessing, listening, and holding space for the pain clients hold that has never been said outloud ❤️

Poetry might come close though 😉

Have you ever used AI for things that would typically be discussed in a counselling session?

Things like...
❔️how to deal with difficult people in your life?
❔️how to manage your anxiety?
❔️how to decrease your stress?
❔️how to navigate a relationship with someone?
❔️...?

I'm hearing more and more about people using AI to help them with their mental and emotional distress because it can be free, it's immediate, and it provides answers a stressed out, anxious, overloaded brain wants to feel some sense of control and ease to navigate the current experience immediately.

And I love that people are using tools they can get to support their needs and continue to move forward with their day.

I'm concerned, however, about the limitations and risks of using AI for psychological and relational needs when taking them as fact and trusted direction.

AI can only provide the answers to the questions asked, with the context received, and the direction the question asks it to go.

It does not have critical thinking skills
It does not challenge the requests made of it
It does not provide information from sited sources when none are available, leading to false answers that are shared to fill the spaces between the question asked and the answers needed.
It also does not have the capabilities to know when to conduct mental health risk assessments to ensure someone's safety.

I offer this information to help inform of the risks of using AI in replacement of therapy or counselling services for topics and needs outside of the capacities of the technology at this time.

Not to mention that the more we use it, the less critical thinking skills we have to support ourselves in future needs, but that's a whole other conversation 🙈

What are your thoughts?
What you think about using AI for therapeutic needs?
And if you've used them for it yourself, I'd love to hear how it was helpful and where it missed the mark for you.

Just because you are capable of doing something (or all of the things) doesn't mean that you also have the capacity to.

Capacity is the maximum amount of space you can contain and produce.

So while you have MANY capabilities, no one one earth has the capacity to do it all, all at the same time.

Cooking, cleaning, shopping, prepping, planning, working, supporting, enjoying, creating, playing, exploring, growing, learning, teaching, sharing, holding, navigating, making, feeling...

We all have limits and cannot do it all or alone.

So if you're feeling maxed out, at (or over) your limit, know that it is perfectly OK (and encouraged) to see what can shift, what can give, what can wait, until there is more capacity for it.

You might not like it, and that's OK.

The only rule here is that you can't put yourself to the side to wait, because without taking care of you, there is no capacity or capability to do anything else ❤️

Save this if you need this reminder down the road, or share it with someone you care about who might need this ❤️

There are times in life when you may need to talk about the same things on repeat for a while.

It might not be because you want to, but because your brain is trying so hard to make sense of something that feels senseless or unfathomable.

And that's OK.

If it's what keeps you going, helps you to try and make sense of even small parts of it, it's helpful.

Find the space where you can do that - with the people who will hold the space for you to repeat and review it for as long as you need to.

The death
The change
The loss
The unknown

And if you're needing a space to help you hold it, feel it, work with it, and navigate it, I hope you find a counsellor who is trained to do that work with you, and who feels like the right fit ❤️

After all, that's what we are here for ❤️

When they people we love most come into this world, come into our lives, they make a monumental shift in how we see our timeline, and life in relationship with them.

We can see life before them, and soak up the life we love we have in the time we have with them.

But rarely do we think about how it will be with life after them... until we are in it.

And that switch from during to after is BRUTAL.

Brutal with no easy fix, or set of tasks you can do quickly to make this pain go away.

This pain needs (and demands) pause, reflection, comfort, support, and time.

Pause to let it settle into reality

Reflection on what it means to be you now with the change

Comfort because this is HARD mental, emotional, and physical work

Support because you were never meant to go it alone

And time so that your capacities to hold this new reality and the pain that comes with it, grows.

So while you are here, in the after space, I hope you can take what you need, with permission for it to go however it goes, and not to out expectations on yourself or others while you figure it out ❤️

Save this for later, or share it with someone who think might need this ❤️

Hallelujah, it's time for the in-office noise machine to be turned off!

Don't get me wrong, I love an appropriately temp'd room, but the constant noise is not loved 🤣

Now we get to return to the breeze from the windows, and soon the heat from the registers 🥰

When you're in a counselling office, what things do you look forward to in the change of the seasons?

We've been having many giggles here at the office lately as we continue to find little ducks placed throughout our waiting area, with no idea who has been leaving these gems for us to find!

Colleagues in the office and in the hall have denied its them so the giggles continue and the joy spreads!

If you are reading this and they are from you - thank you for the added brightness and smiles in our days!

Want to come see if there's more? Or thinking about working in a space that has this much fun?
