Essential Oil Science & Research - Fennel
Let’s talk liver health and a pretty amazing essential oil you may not know much about—fennel root bark EO. This oil is rich in unique compounds like dillapiole, apiole, and myristicin (you’ll find those in dill and parsley too!), and it’s getting attention for its potential to reduce liver fibrosis.

So what’s liver fibrosis?

It’s a condition where your liver starts building up scar tissue due to ongoing inflammation or damage—kind of like your liver’s version of a permanent bruise. Not great.

In a preclinical study, researchers gave fennel root bark EO to mice with liver damage. Here’s what happened:
Their liver and spleen sizes shrunk (a good sign!)
Liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST) in the blood dropped
There was less inflammation and immune cell invasion
And most importantly—a major reduction in scar tissue buildup (collagen)
But how does it work?

Fennel EO basically shuts down a metabolic “switch” in the liver—specifically the HK2/PKM2/LDHA pathway. This switch fuels the overactive cells that form scar tissue. By turning that off, the oil helps protect the liver and promote healing.

This is huge for natural liver support and might hold promise for those concerned about chronic liver inflammation or scarring.
