Ever wondered what that click might be in your jaw? Or have you ever had that click stop and then suddenly you can’t open your mouth? This may be related to a disc inside your jaw joint!
Each jaw joint has what is called an articular disc, which normally sits between your skull and the jawbone. However, this disc can get pulled forwards by muscle tension, postures, or certain habits. When it does, this disc can create a clicking sound when you are opening and closing your jaw. This happens as the disc “clicks” back into place. Now don’t panic yet, many people (up to 1 in 10) can have clicking in their jaw with minimal or no jaw pain or discomfort, and it may never develop into anything further. However, in some people the disc will get stuck and not click back into place. This can cause an often very painful and limiting condition called “lock jaw”. If you are experiencing locking in your jaw, targeted physiotherapy treatment can be extremely beneficial and help get the disc moving again, relax the muscles and help decrease your pain. 💪
