The Scott Homestead

The Scott Homestead Living close to the way our ancestors lived: cooking from scratch and raising much of own food. More than soap!

I wanted to share some of the things we've been learning in the kitchen [and around our little homestead!] and trying to go back to the ways Gramma did things with healthy and natural products and healthy eating.

Spring is finally here… (although it was snowing this morning lol). Our ton of snow is melting. Rivers are running fast and there are warnings about flooding and roads washing out in different areas. Drive safe and be aware of the weather, rising temps and the water around your property and near roadways.

I’ve been seeing a lot of people talk about air squats, so if you want to try them too (especially if you are sedentary and/or work at a desk a lot), I wanted to make sure everyone was doing them properly! 🙂

So, I over did it the other day on my first power walk of the season (I’m 5’2” keeping up with the stride of my 6’1” husband lol) and my knee has decided to puff up, be achy and get stiff. A little discouraged because I signed up for DDPY Beast Mode and now I will have a hard time getting the workouts and steps in that I was planning, BUT now to PIVOT and change up my plans. I will do what I can and keep moving forward!! I’m only in competition with myself and this is part of my journey! I will modify and keep going. I also made my own “gel” ice pack out of 2 cups water, 1 cup rubbing alcohol and a sq**rt of dish soap. (You can add a bit of blue food colouring if you want it to look like a store bought one 😉). Put the mixture into a heavy duty freezer zip lock and get the air out before sealing it. Place it into a second zip lock and throw it in the freezer! Works great and it’s CHEAP! Hubby and I have used this one for 6 years now! 🤗

It’s getting cold and snowy again! Winters trying hard to stay this year. On a good note, the snow has melted down by a couple of feet this last week. 🤗

GUYS!!! These are the BEST buns I have ever made!! And they were quick to make! No rise time!! They look gorgeous and they’re just as delicious!! YUMMM!!

Attached is the recipe if you want to try it! I made 2 changes: honey instead of sugar and butter instead of vegetable oil (although you can substitute avacado oil as well).

YUMMY homemade hamburgers! I’ve made these burgers for YEARS and they’re always a hit!

Recipe:
1 pound of hamburger,
1 egg,
1 pouch of onion soup mix (you can use a 1/4 cup of fresh finely chopped onions if you prefer with a splash of Worcestershire sauce),
6 or 7 saltine crackers crushed with a rolling pin (place in a ziplock, remove the air and use a rolling pin to crush them on the counter),
Optional: About 1/8 to 1/4 of a cup of your favourite BBQ sauce or ketchup

Mix well, divide into 4 patties, coat with a little avacado oil with a pastry brush before putting them on the BBQ to stop them from sticking and yer done! 😋

Hints: weigh your mixed burger and divide into 4 for equal burgers. We have two the day I make them and refrigerate two for the next day or two.
Also, if you don’t have a patty maker, shape your burgers, flatten with the bottom of a plate then use your thumb or a spoon to make an indent in the middle on one side. This stops the burgers from puffing up in the center! 🙂

Last fill of the tote with snow for the critters water until next winter! This is the waiting game time between when all the snow melts and we can set up the outside totes to collect rain for the critters and gardens over the summer.
